This is a specific manifestation of the ego's defense. When the ego cannot bear the weight of humiliation, it might identify a scapegoat an individual or group on whom anger and blame can be placed. By focusing negative emotions on the scapegoat, the humiliated individual can distance themselves from the pain and source of their humiliation.

None of the arguments against it are constitutional or coherent as far as the USA goes;

-If Marriage's sole purpose is procreation, it begs questions about the elderly or infertile marrying.

-If childrearing of some kind is the purpose, gay couples can do this too, and no evidence exists they are worse at it or that outcomes are poorer

-If it's judged by God, that is a religious issue and not the matter of a secular constitution

-Marriage predates religion and has had varied connotations or meanings depending on the era it has existed in

The remaining cultural resistance to it has waned and largely dissolved to the point where it is just people who are open Christian nationalists who want to institute their religion into public law and do not view privacy as a valid concept

also beyond all the opposition either being factually wrong or legally dubious, there's the fact that a large number of proponents of marriage being sacrosanct between one man/woman are currently part of what amounts to a cult for a former President that has been divorced several times who leads a party that has been mired in perpetual sex crimes for like 20 years, up to and including one of their most powerful people being a child molester who went to prison

The people defending their position aren't necessarily the ones that make it plainly wrong but it's kind of blatant that "sanctity" is just a word to their political leadership

Meanwhile the prime minister at the time also said that he would 100% back Trumps potential war with Iran.
