I got this from a website mostly used by women in Japan: https://girlschannel.net/topics/4638199/

"The people who happen to be against abortion are men, those who don't want children, and others who are done raising children because it's someone else's problem."

"Republican states are dangerous. I imagine it's like the Middle Ages within America."

"In America, medical care really depends on money."

"It's horrifying how abortion and prenatal testing are illegal. If you want to have a child in America, you'll have to first move to an area where it's legal."

"There are children who are better off not existing. Testing is important."

"I can't say things are perfect, but I think Japan is still in good shape because it has a functioning separation of church and state."

"Whenever I talk to Christians, they talk as if everything is given to them by God. And that includes trees and plants. Don't they understand school biology? That's what I think."

"When it comes to religion, the same applies to divorce. There are times when I feel that Japan is surprisingly more liberating."

"With recent bills being passed, I'm starting to feel scared that women's rights can be taken away so easily."

"I don't want to go out of my way to give birth to a handicapped child. It would be difficult for me to raise them and it might even be more painful for the child."

SNS
"An American man told me on social media that Japanese people are servants of the USA. That made me so angry."

"Even if a fetus has physical defects, it's life, so they won't kill (abort) it. In that case, those who are against abortion should raise the babies instead."

"What is America, the land of freedom?"

A lot of Japanese millennials are very progressive when it comes to a lot of social issues like LGBT acceptance/marriage, gun rights, and abortion.

Guns are already completely banned in the country what opinion do they have on them? What's progressive views on gun rights there?

Literally an assassination of one of the most prominent politicians because the guy was a major function as to why this one cult was in power.

It's because of their background, but many Japanese hold very anti-gun beliefs. The only reason many progressives in the States don't hold anti-gun because guns are basically everywhere, so the middle ground for them is more controlled/enforced gun laws.

I've just never seen protests, talks or even twitter chatter about it. The only marches I've seen in person are a few Ultra Nationalist groups saying "Japan for the Japanese!" in a couple places and a single LGBT march in Shinjuku that was entirely foreigners, lol.

I literally stumbled into one in Sapporo one time. It looked like a funeral procession.

Not really surprising. Considering their stance on freedom & liberty, the US was pretty fucking late in recognising same-sex marriage. And you still have people like Kim Davis in modern times.

And yet they beat Australia to it. I'm never going to forget that.

I'm not sure that's entirely true though. The article just says that people in Japan support it now more than US citizens did in when it got passed.

All sources I looked at show people nowadays support gay marriage in the United States even more now than they did in 2015.

Yeah, it's definitely gone down, but it's somehow still higher than Japan according to that.

What's sad is that I'm wondering if it's the sample, since 2022 it was 71%.

Probably. I'm wondering if it's just bizarro polls being done, because 71% to 60% is a massively confused jump.

Shame that public opinion won't sway the Japanese government.

They're not completely banned though? They just have extremely strict application & training process and you can't get most guns like in America or carry them in public.

ITT: people pretending they understand Japanese culture without living there

I think there are at least two other people on this board besides me who live or have lived there. So I will say that most people here are pretty liberal when it comes to human rights, and definitely lean left. The upcoming generation is definitely going to be left leaning, and the country already has a poor view of religion, partially thanks to the revelation that Abe was playing around with the Unification Church.

One thing is, most Japanese people dont worry about politics like Americans do. The younger people will eventually, but most people i know age 30-60 here are indifferent to everything. The government knows this and likes it this way. Very few people fight back when anything happens, for various reasons.

My basic understanding is that the Japanese government's position on issues is not necessarily indicative of how the people feel about those issues. Like you say, largely left-leaning. And no, I haven't lived there, this is just hearsay.

This too. It's harder to take the pulse of the community when that community doesn't speak up as much.

The government is extremely disconnected from the public here. Its mostly a bunch of old men who have no idea what the world outside their bubble is. For example, the whole overwork thing, low pay, yet they keep raising prices on common goods every year, the utter failure at keeping Unification out of the government, treatment of women, treatment of foreigners, etc.

Besides the "Japan for the Japanese" Uyoku groups, which are all old men, every protest I've EVER seen in Tokyo has been filled with foreigners. English signs talking about LGBT or BLM mostly. I don't see Japanese people marching in these almost ever.

I know, it generally is, but that still seems weird. Like more people should be made aware of their extremist visions when somehow that many people's opinions have changed that radically in 1 year. That's concerning to say about their stability and how much they think on their own terms. Because it seems nuts to think that people went from overwhelming majority to just ... A majority and we've somehow regressed to 2015 levels of opinions in one year. Especially over an opinion that really doesn't change much.
