It always confused me when people thought Bill Maher was left leaning. He is a MAGA Republican. Leading up to the 2020 election he would constantly talk about Trump and how he wasnt going to leave office if he lost the election. He literally reminded people every single episode and would put montages of himself saying the same thing over and over about how Trump was never going to leave office, as if he was going to say I told ya so when it happened. spoiler alert: it didnt happen. He's never had any morals or ideals beyond propping up his ego. 2016 was when the noticeable cracks began forming when he started blaming Trump's win on liberals not just rolling over and allowing conservatives to persecute gays and transgender, and stood up for women and minority rights. A bunch of liberals turned him off after that, but the real damage was COVID restrictions minorly impacting him which caused a full flip, hence him praising DeSantis on the issue as if Florida didn't have the highest per capita deaths
It also doesn't help that liberals don't tend to idolize their media figures like conservatives do. It's very similar to the transformation Musk had when Democrats started realizing how shitty his practices were, so he started going alt right because those types would worship him --- In Brady We Trust. Maher was never "liberal"

People who legitimately think "both sides" are actively trying to harm them. Maher suffers from the same delusion all rich comedians have is they think comedy is the last bastion of truth and philosophy and thus they should be able to say anything without consequences.
