Disney's version of Winnie the Pooh is still off limits but because they didn't create the OG Winnie they really have no say in that one iirc. That's why this mf doesn't have his shirt on. And for other game reasons apparently too >.>

Eh, already at least 2 pieces of media that have Winnie the Pooh take on the horror genre and it doesn't seem like people know where else to take it. Making something too kiddy won't attract people to it, but the horror aspect just isn't being done in an appealing way.

I dont think Disney ever owned the full copyright for the character. The original book predates anything Disney did with him. Disney only had copyright for their specific version

Big believer in no idea belonging to anybody (aka, down with copyright), but it does make me sad to see how people pervert the original intention of Winnie the Pooh. I was hoping public domain would allow greater exploration of these characters in a way that big corporations are too afraid of doing. The truth is, parody laws already allowed this type of content and there's an entire industry built off of being edgy with kid properties (many of which I enjoy).

Hope they get it out of their system.

It annoys me that the moment a kids property goes to the public domain the immediate response is "what if we made it into a horror thing?" and it annoys me that this creatively bankrupt shit is going to be rewarded by the public for it.

Yep, so long as it's based off the original Winnie the Pooh. Disney's Winnie? "Don't fuck with The Mouse" still applies.

Letting Winnie the Pooh go public domain was a mistake.

Nah it isn't. Chill.

It just happens that these vapid edgelord projects gain a lot more virality than something actually tasteful with the character. I've never really cared about Poohbear after turning 8 but I'm certain there are fan creatives out there happy to do what they want without worrying about Disney suing and claiming their art.

I fucking hope not. As bad as this is, you have to think about the bigger picture. They already fucked over most of us with game copyright laws. Emulators and Roms would have been legal past 20 years if they hadn't started fucking around with extending copyright laws past their expiry date. That's the main reason you see so many terrible Pooh copies. People just want to stick it to Disney. Any other medium wouldn't have this same kind of reaction, aside for companies like Konami with the random Metal Gear parody/copy games.

What are people realistically going to do with Winnie the Pooh? If they try and make something for children, Disney will sue them anyway. What else does that leave besides ironic adaptation where he's scary, edgy, violent, sexy(?), or whatever else a kid's property becomes when you reimagine it as a property for teens or adults.

It's not the kind of IP that drives the imagination. If I were to put together a team of anthropomorphic animal superheroes, I would never think to make it a team consisting of a rabbit, a piglet, and a yellow bear in a red suit. I couldn't imagine doing some twisted Tim Burton-esque take on the Hundred Acre Woods either. People are just kinda stuck with edgy ironic takes on the character.
