The math gets complicated depending on who votes no, present, etc.

Still trying to wrap my head around what the Dems should do. Gaetz needs more GOP on board with his motion. Dems can extract a hefty price from McCarthy to keep him speaker.

McCarthy already had to work with the Democrats to get a deal to avert a shutdown and all that did was buy 45 days before a budget has to be passed, which the freedom caucus is surely not going to make easy. If he wants Democrats' help with that or anything else in the future he can't afford to stab them in the back.

Congress has rules (that they set), and then each conference (Dem and Rep) have their own rules. Part of this is decorum, but its mostly procedural stuff that keeps people from going rogue.

I thought if a single Republican voted to get rid of McCarthy then hes gone, under the terms of the deal to make him speaker?

I think the Dems should just find enough Republicans to find a consensus Speaker that will act more a steward than a political partisan. Likely from outside the House.

It's clear that Republicans, as a whole, are unable to govern anything at this point, best bet is to get enough to agree with the Dems on someone who isn't going to cow to either extreme.

And then when the Dems take back the house they can get back to having a real Democrat in that spot. At this point the best option is to get someone who won't break everything.

Yeah, but they likely only intended to actually go through with removing Mccarthy if there was some sort of agreement from within the freedom caucus.

A Rep on CNN said that despite that agreement, the rule in their conference is that no one brings this type of vote without a majority of the majority agreeing
