PJax deserves a lot of criticism for a lot of what he did with the trilogy, but this sequence is basically the peak of high fantasy film.

You can see even Legolas is winded and barely gets across the bridge before Gandalf turns around and faces the enemy. Also the Balrog is huge and needs to squeeze through doors and hallways and whatnot that are sized for Dwarves.

IIRC, the sound guys made the roar by rubbing cinder blocks together, or at least something like that. Since it was like an elemental they wanted an inorganic sound.
