Most of us are getting up to that age, I think. My sister just had one and obviously my parents have had several each. The biggest danger is the anesthesia.

True. I'm mainly just not looking forward to spending a day on the toilet with the stuff they make you drink to clean out your system

Yes, one

It is safe. Not an operation. They just run a scope inside you. The worst part is the stuff you drink before it.

I didn't get bloated. I didn't know they even did the air part. I was completely sedated for mine.

The worst part is having to drink the liquid required before the procedure. It looks absolutely disgusting.
Post procedure don't have any family members around because you will be farting air for the next 30 minutes and it's the comically woopie cushion fart sounds that you try to hold it in to not laugh.

What?

As explained to me, the alternative to the colonoscopy is you mail your movement in. Less definitive, but will hit the flags. You can follow with the colonoscopy, if needed.

Unless you are all talking about something other than colon cancer, for perverse CE purposes. I wont judgemostly.

How effective is ,mailing your sample in ? It does seem much less invasive. You will never get a colonscopy?

Every doctor will prescribe a different cleanse that they like. It will probably either be 4L of cleanse solution, or a small amount of medicine followed by 4L of your liquids of choice. The night before and morning of I had a cup of what was basically Sunny D, followed by 2L of liquids over 2 hours.

Drinking that much in such a small volume of time is hard, especially while constantly running to the toilet and not being able to trust your farts.

It's literally crap in a box and have it tested for cancer DNA and bleeding. It's not as definitive as sending in the magic school bus, but for people without symptoms of colon cancer that's usually good enough.

The down side is if you get the colonoscopy, they can usually take care of any suspicious polyps they find right then and there. Best to ask your doctor about your situation specifically (family history and such) and follow their advice as to which is better for you.

Its super safe. If youre worried, forego the anaesthetic, but Id advise against that.

I've only had one. Although I wouldn't want one every week, it was really no big deal at all. Yes, the prep is annoying, but not as bad as I'd been led to believe. These days, it's a low-fiber diet leading up to a liquid diet with OTC laxatives in Gatorade. You have to drink so much that you don't really get hungry until the day of the procedure. The anesthesia is great. The worst part is that it took about a week for my digestion to get back to normal after.

Ive had colonoscopies Ive been able to work the day after, ones where its taken a day or two before I wasnt pooping like crazy. A lot of it seems to depend on whether the gastroenterologist deflates your bowel, or lets you deflate naturally

I've had 2. One a long time ago for something I can't even remember and another when I got pancolitis and my whole colon swelled up, which is the most miserable I've ever been in my entire life. Never had any issues. You'll be farting a bit once you get out.

I don't remember having to drink any liquid the second time. They just told me no food and liquids after a certain time or something like that, but it was a godawful time so my memory could be hazy.

I have. The procedure itself is nothing. They start the anesthesia, next thing you know youre leaving.

The prep is the bitch. Its not as bad as it used to be, as instead of drinking the barium solution, you can drink certain colors of Gatorade with Miralax shook up in it. But you basically have to go on a restricted diet for a week, with a day or two of that being completely liquid, and youre going to be having diarrhea multiple times a day for part of that week.

I would expect to lose about 5 pounds by going through the prep.

My entire colon became inflamed. It was basically over a week of having extreme diarrhea every 10 minutes even if I had nothing to expel. I could barely eat or drink anything (even sipping on water was miserable and made me have to go) and became extremely dehydrated as a result and put on an IV when I finally went to the hospital. It's the worst thing I've ever experienced. I probably did have to drink something for the colonoscopy, but it was such a difficult time I'm probably misremembering not having to drink anything.

It was probably this then. Or maybe because I had pretty much expelled everything I had anyway, I didn't have to do it or at least to the average degree.

I had one earlier this year, and it went really smooth. The only bad part is the laxative and liquid diet prep. I was on the toilet for a good chunk of the evening the day before. The anesthesia knocked me right out, and I woke up feeling fine.

I'm getting one on Monday, I'll let you know.

From everyone I've talked to, the prep is worse than the procedure.

No fruits or vegetables, and a low fiber diet for 2 days, and then no food AT ALL for 24 hours. You also drink this high powered laxative that basically has you literally shitting water by the end of it to flush out your colon and intestines.

Not looking forward to that part.

It's a generally safe procedure, but very invasive. There are a lot of risks associated with them. A colonoscopy's risks are worth the advance notice in treating a highly treatable form of cancer that is exceedingly deadly if left unchecked.

Everyone with a family history of colon cancer, or 45 and older, should get routine screening for it. You won't need to do colonoscopies every year, but the screening tests are always worth doing.

I've had 3. It's a routine procedure with very little risk, the largest being adverse reaction anesthesia, but even that is rare because they don't put you down deep like a real surgery. You are usually given propofol, which is a helluva buzz for about 4 seconds, then you have the best sleep of your life.

Also, I'd be dead if I hadn't caught my cancer at stage 1 with a colonoscopy.
