One of the few things that really makes me hate a person is when they run defense for the person they know is obviously in the wrong. I don't mean defending from disproportionate retribution, of course. You know what I mean. Fucking, throw the book at them too.

Entirely possible she hasn't seen the footage, but to have raised that kid in such denial for so long; get the fuck out.

Honestly, I don't think the intent was to kill. In the clip, they thought he was knocked out. It seemed like a game to them. But I'm sure the reality of their crimes will sink in once their sentences are read and they hear the jail time (25 years for murder and up to 20 for attempted murder in Nevada).

They should definitely be punished for what they did, however their sentence shouldn't be determined or exacerbated based off the fact it happened to a retired police chief (for anybody who may want/advocate for this). I don't think active police should get special treatment/sentencing factoring either, however that dude was a civilian when ran over and should be regarded as such.

The sentencing should be enhanced off the depravity, encouragement and documentation of the crime, if those are enhancement variables.

  • 10 years for a hit and run.

This is stuff I googled to post quickly. But it gets so god damn old to read about cyclists getting killed by drunk drivers or people who hit and run and just get less than 5 years most of the time. It's honestly a slap on the wrist. I'm a cyclist I've been hit 3 times by drivers and have had trash thrown at me aggressive moves made at me to run me off the road and so forth. Most drivers have an irrational seething hatred of cyclists because they slow them down from reaching their destination by seconds and it upsets them to have to wait.

I would not be surprised AT ALL if this kid gets less than a year in jail honestly. Slaps on the wrist for murdering a person. Use a gun? Easiest 20 years of jail to the court. However USE A CAR to kill someone riding a bike, 5 years of jail or less. Disgusting. Absolutely infuriating to read this. Knowing those teens deliberately hit a cyclist and are laughing and thinking they are going to get less than 30 days in jail and will likely get away with it despite being intentional kills me on the inside.

I'm honestly curious about pedestrian murders by cars now. I imagine those are worse since they aren't in the "warzone"/street like cyclists are. When you're on the road with a bike your life is basically forfeit.

The reason I said something is because the intent very much matters. By arguing that they didn't intend to kill, then the amount they can "find out" could possibly be even less. If that wasn't your intent, then cool, sorry. I'm just saying... Let's not pretend there was anything but intent to kill, there, because it's very obvious.

Hopefully. But I have my doubts. Teens get very lenient treatment, even if it was intentional. We'll see. TBH I consider being drunk/drugs as not an accident at all when you kill someone. You get in a car drunk whatever consequences you do while drunk/high are completely on you. Doesn't matter if it was an accident.

What prison is going to beat up some kids for being in jail? You think they're gonna throw these teens right in with the adults? Doubt. Maybe the COs or whatever will rough them up while they're in juvie but it's not going to be proportionate.

Lol, again I point to all the articles where people have been drunk, driven on the wrong side of the road, high, or did hit and runs and had less than 5 years. Only ONE of them surprised me.

I do have some solace some of the murders by cars I've seen that are intentional had any semblance of being fair. They usually ended up being 10+ years. But I've only seen two of them.

Nah that wasn't my intent. And I'm no law expert, but I don't think they'd be able to get out of the murder and attempted murder charges that way. If they caused a fatal accident due to not paying attention or something to that effect, then it would just be manslaughter. But they intentionally steered the car right at the guy and laughed about it. The malice aforethought was there.

I wasn't the only one who was told that many times. But yes, basically killing people with a car is seen as less. I think it's because most people can sympathize killing someone in some "FREAK ACCIDENT" or so and think if that were me I'd want the sentence to be less. Instead of taking responsibility.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/1/4/9/AABn_6AAE4DF.png
This is of the cases WHERE it went to court and it didn't just disappear.
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/1/5/0/AABn_6AAE4DG.png
This is all in just 2014 where people did what I did. Just search for sentences of cyclists who were killed by cars and see if anything pops up. It's very hard, but most of the time they get off light. If you DO get charged for murder which is pretty hard (murder implies you were intending to kill vs accidentally kill) you get the normal sentence. Otherwise you get a slap on the wrist essentially.

https://www.vice.com/en/article/9bzdpv/you-can-kill-anyone-you-want-with-your-car-as-long-as-you-dont-really-mean-it

Anyway here's a vice article that sums up that adage essentially. Here's some "choice parts":

Nationwide, incidents like Canns often result in misdemeanor charges, tickets, or nothing. Leah Shahum from the San Francisco Bike Coalition told the New York Times last year that her organization does not know of a single case of a cyclist fatality in which the driver was prosecuted, except for DUI or hit-and-run. Kristin Smith, also of the SF Coalition, says that Last year, four people were hit and killed in San Francisco and no charges were ever brought, including for a collision captured on video that showed the driver was at fault. Last year in New York City, the bike-advocacy organization Times Up pushed for changes in police investigations of bicyclist deaths by painting chalk-body outlines on streets, marked with words familiar from NYPD reports: No Criminality Suspected.

Portland, Oregon, attorney Ray Thomas explains that DAs dont like to go after some soccer dad who made a mistake The police, prosecutors, and courts dont feel its a mistake that should net someone jail time There are criminally negligent homicide laws. But [a crash] has got to be really, really bad.

League of Illinois Bicyclists executive director Ed Barsotti explains why cases arent prosecuted in his state: We are left in that situation where you have to be charged with a felony, and its really tough to meet that standard, or youre stuck with the usual traffic citations. We and many others are interested in having that prosecution gap closed. Illinois created a Distracted Driving Task Force in 2008, which generated a list of laws for new charges against drivers who hit bicyclists. Unfortunately, for lack of political will, none of those laws passed.

I guess in this case the kids made a video of themselves doing it. If they hadn't it would honestly be 30 days and he's out. The video is the damning part.

What prison is going to beat up some kids for being in jail? You think they're gonna throw these teens right in with the adults? Doubt. Maybe the COs or whatever will rough them up while they're in juvie but it's not going to be proportionate

In jail maybe. (Were i live detention officers in jails are pretty much cops too) not actually prison most COs don't bother looking up why someone is locked up. And even with those that do we have a awful lot of child molesters who get left alone.

The fact they are bragging about killing this guy and doubt they will get much time shows they have zero remorse and should be given the harshest time possible.

Normal teenagers shit talk about killing cops in GTA, most do not go out and try it or actually do so like these two did.
