That was, without a doubt, the darkest ending in the entire franchise. It's like the game remembered what happened in the first few hours of the game at the very end and just hit you with a sledgehammer to the heart. Three of my favorite characters died (or, maybe two? We'll have to see, but I'm pretty sure that Clive's dead), the land will be cosigned to a slow death with the spread of the Blight, and even if the Hideaway succeeds in making blighted land farmable, many will still die from starvation getting to that point. Oh, and the Akahasic are atill wandering around, no?

Ultima was correct in the end where he essentially laughed at Clive for winning. "Yeah, you won. But what's your prize?" essentially telling him to enjoy the slow death of his species.

I know that there are two DLC planned that I hope expand the story. There's some headcanon in the subreddit that Medicine Girl is going to formulate Soft to cure branded from the curse (and maybe save Clive), and that she'll end up being the dominant of Leviathan, but that's just wishful thinking on the community's part, I think. I still see only a glimmer of hope at the end, while everything else is pretty damned bleak.

A part of me is hoping for a XVI-2 as well, but I want to see how the DLC go first.

I loved it, the ending made me tear up a bunch. It's a sad ending but one absolutely filled with hope. I thought it was perfect. I think you are reading far too much into the blight, as it was clear that the land was saved from the removal of magic. That post credit scene showed as much.

I'm on the fence, and only if the DLC is good enough.

I didn't see that. I saw that the Blight was still spreading unabated and there was nothing to be done. I think even Ultima said the same? Where did you see otherwise?

*FFXVI End/Postgame Spoilers*

I saw it as the land was "saved" because the people at the Hideaway figured out how to grow stuff and do other things(like heating up the forges w/o magic) in a blighted land with no assistance from magic. Ultima was right about the land going to shit, but humanity survived anyway.

The epilogue when magic was gone and they are in a super lush green area having a normal life. Ultima was just being a dick, but he was wrong. The entire purpose of the game is that yeah, humans are flawed, tragedy will follow the destruction of the crystals, but we persevere and move forward, looking for the light on the horizon. The land wasn't doomed at all, it was the dying words of a lunatic god.

Figured a topic about beating the game would allude to a discussion on it, but I can see how that might not be the case. I've gone and edited my posts with tags.

As I took it: far as I know they've only grown shitty apples and drinkable water. A huge first step, but they got a long way to go to growing other things that sustain civilization, like wheat, barley, and rice.

...I missed that. I comitted the cardinal sin of closing the game after the credits rolled. Looks like I gotta fight the last battle again.

Thank you, I'll watch this on my next break.

I also learned by browsing that there's a Final Fantasy mode after this, which explains where the last 2 trophies are locked behind, is my guess. So looks like I got to beat it again to get the clear data saved.

Thankfully it IS sans commentary, they just say "oh there's more!" so you should be good to go. It's like a two minute thing but really puts the ending in perspective. And yeah it has a NG+ mode with new weapons to get and harder enemies. Seems fun, I'll definitely check it out when the DLC comes out.

Im in the opinion that Clive lives. Jill compares him to a sunrise near the end, Tomes brings up him taking up the pen after all the fighting is done and Clive only loses his left hand. Clive has taken up a different names and chose Joshua as his pen name.

The thing about the ending is it's so vague and there's sprinkles throughout that can point to any number of endings. This is one that I think of too, because the final song when everyone is crying is also all about coming back. And Clive says to Jill "when you see the rising sun I will be there" which, well, she saw the rising sun. It could just be an allegory for the birth of the free world, but hopefully DLC can help it out a bit. I like how it's ambiguous, it makes it much more interesting to me.

I really did love the game. They did a fantastic job with the story, really strong.

Also to touch on the earlier posts here:

Pretty sure the blight is still a thing, even with the removal of magic. Although was it magic in the first place that caused it due to Ultima's race overusing it? I forgot. But it was implied by both Ultima and Clive that there would be suffering and death after Ultima's defeat, due to the blight approaching.

Edit: But we do see the post credit scenes where humanity survived with a lush green area. So maybe they found a way to survive? Or the blight really did end.

I mean the crystals were draining the magic from the land and causing the blight. One would think that, with all crystals gone, then at least the blight would stop because there's no more magic being siphoned from the planet. I'm not saying it goes away fully, it just stops spreading. So yeah there is a lot of blighted garbage around.

He was using the crystals to suck up the life force to get enough magical power to create a whole new world and merge with Mythos. At least this was all my interpretation, that the crystals WERE bad and getting rid of them all + Ultima meant the blight was at least stopped.

The blight ended. Magic was the cause of it, and magic was removed from the world. The death and suffering predicted was because the entire world's population was based around using magic for every daily task. They didn't have the skills, tech or know-how on how to survive without magic to do things for them. Hell, they saw it as a miracle when a basic forge that didn't need magic was designed.
