Owned both growing up and SNES is the clear winner. Nintendo created a dozen top tier franchises that still keep their extremely underpowered console in second place for adoption rate among consoles where Sega had... Sonic. Personally the last good Sonic game was Sonic 2 but I think even die hard fans will admit the 3d Sonic games are trash.

The Genesis had Sonic, Streets of Rage, and Phantasy Star, but they didn't come close to the best Nintendo had.

I had a Genesis first. Once I got an SNES I let my brothers put the SNES in their room and never looked back. SNES 4 Life.

Picked SNES but meant to pick Genesis, I had both as a kid, had more Genesis games overall and played it the most. Being young, Genesis having blood in games like MK and Robocop vs Terminator was a big draw at the time.

It was way underutilized. The PC Engine had more great releases on CD. Makes me sad because there are some really great games on there, just not nearly as many as there should have been.

most people here side with nintendo so this poll will definitely be biased

personally, i think genesis wins it. the games were just more fun and executed better overall. the genesis library wins it for me.

SNES. It was clearly the better system, across many comparisons, like franchises, graphics, hell even sound quality.

Genesis did have some pretty damn fun games though. Streets of Rage, Sonic, etc.

SNES hands down. I grew up with both, and the Genesis library doesnt compare. Most of the time when there were competing versions of third parties, the SNES version won handily, as the Console War channel on YouTube reminded me recently.

Probably SNES, if only because I can think of more SNES games that I adore off the top of my head than Genesis.

But I was a Sega kid growing up. Loved it, but if I had to choose these days I'd probably pick SNES.

Genesis. Streets of Rage 1-3 (especially 3, the GOAT beat-em-up), Sonic 1-3&K, Revenge of Shinobi, Shining Force 1&2, Dynamite Headdy, World of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck, these games are incredible.

SNES is great too, especially Chrono Trigger and Super Metroid.

I miss that era of consoles being completely different. It made it fun to go to your friends house when they had a different console than you.

This one is tricky. Technically the Genesis has superior sound on a technical level, but if you aren't specifically designing your music for the FM synthesizer it has, it likely won't sound good. Meanwhile the SNES can use (low quality) samples, so it can do a low fidelity version of basically anything (technically you could do higher fidelity but the file size would be a problem). The result is most cross platform games sound much better on the SNES and even a lot of Genesis exclusives sound like shit due to not knowing how to use the FM synthesizer. But you have stuff like Streets of Rage, Shinobi, etc. that really used the technology well.

The Genesis brought Arcades home for the first time nearly killing them.

Nintendo would never have made a move in the console industry if Sega didn't push their hand.

I said it once and I'll say it again, if Nintendo had their way, everyone would still be playing the NES.

The Genesis had a greater impact on what we consider gaming today.

Genesis often had better playing and performing multiplatform titles. It was capable of pushing out more sprites and effects at a time with a smoother frame rate making it perfect for shootem ups and action games. The sound chip might not have been the most elegant at sampling, but it had a crunchy quality that made for some of my favorite gaming tunes. I highly recommend Lightning Force (Thunderforce 4) and Shinobi 3.

I only have a SNES so I'm biased towards that, my friend had a mega drive and the game I remember the most on that is Dynamite Heddy, whereas with the SNES we played the hell out of all the Mario games and DKC's, F-zero, Mario Kart ect - I still have my SNES and it still works!

Genesis had some enjoyable games and it wasn't a bad console. SNES however had an overall way better and more diverse library, and some of the games from it are to this day still some of my favorites.

I had both as a kid--Genesis in my room and SNES in my sister's--and I almost completely lost interest in the Genesis in favor of the SNES by the time that console generation wound down.

Definitely SNES, but my fam had both so I did still get to experience a lot of the genesis' best games.

Like post 28 said, by the time the 16 bit boys were going towards their twilight years we were pretty much done playing the genesis though....last three games I remember playing (granted two were good ones, the last one just ok) was x-men 2, phantasy star 4 and streets of rage 3. SNES on the other hand we were still playing the hell out of it with stuff like snes killer instinct, donkey kong country 2 (I didn't care for part 3 too much), chrono triggs+mario rpg, mega man X3, final fight 3, yoshi's island, secret of evermore, dracula X and so on.....SNES didn't really start slowing down until the middle of like 1996.

I played on what the whole of Europe/Australasia/Brazil was playing on and that was the Mega Drive.

The console that ripped the poor shitty kiddy SNES to shreds.

Give me games like Sonic, Streets Of Rage, Golden Axe and The Shinobi franchise over the games Nintendo had.

Give me the superior graphics and gameplay of The Mega Drive.

Sega did have the Sega Channel which was fucking awesome but we didn't have. Had to go to a buddies to play.

Had both but I'm hard pressed to remember what the genesis even had besides Sonic and various licensed games (those batman and Ghostbusters games were good, though)

SNES meanwhile had like...literally everything else foundational to gaming. All the FFs, like 90% of the notable RPGs, Mario/DK/Zelda. MegaMan.
