Seriously tho, what did they have in that huge box, a bunch of hamster wheels?

ProFile was a good name. You'd have to be some type of pro to afford it in the 80s

We had a sales guy from Apple trying to tell us that They were the largest seller of storage devices in the world (this was 20 years ago when I was still in IT consulting).

Too bad they could only sell that storage one 20 GB ipod at a time.

in the 70s they had computers that filled up an entire room and you fed it data cards. My dad had to take a college class on how to use them, and then that kind of computer was obsolete just a few years later. He was so mad

There is a spy movie with them with Michael Caine. The computer is supposed to be a predictive supercomputer for actions a enemy country might take. It also recommends what agents to send. I saw it and one of the characters was sliding those cards in

I'd be pretty surprised if punch cards saw side usage into the '80s, but I suppose it's not entirely unthinkable

Although punch cards could be used for (read-only) storage, and even output, they were most commonly used for input (one line of text per card). The same computer that took punch cards might also have magnetic tape or even (washing-machine sized) hard disks for secondary storage. But the main thing is that back then, secondary storage was not used as frivolously as it is now.

Yeah the guys that came up with that stuff don't get enough credit. Frequently overlooked also. There were great advancements in this field. With the punch cards and the floppy discs...etc.... These guys should be famous. But, why aren't they , though?

To be fair there was no software making that storage amount an issue.

It's like how a 64 GB Switch can store quite a few mainstream games but a 64 GB PS5 would be a useless brick outside of indie titles.
