She shot her 15 and 5-year-old daughters to death in Virginia after inducing them with melatonin-laced gummy bears. Veronica Youngblood did it because of a custody dispute with the father, who initially was going to take both kids with him but agreed to take the younger one. After being shot, The 15-year-old was alive long enough to call 9/11 and tell dispatchers that her mother had hit her. During the trial, after jurors heard a recording of that call, some were traumatized enough to ask if they could receive trauma therapy.

The mother said she was an good mother to her kids in court, but something snapped. She said she grew up in poverty, was sexually abused as a kid, and did sex work to support the eldest daughter.

The defense team was trying to lower the sentence to 42. The father was in trial but concealed himself in the courtroom, so she couldn't see him because he couldn't look at her for causing all of this, knowing that she had a lot of hate towards him.

All I gotta say is.. Fuck this shit. This is the kind of shit that makes me want to support the health penalty. You have animosity towards the father, so you selfishly take it out on the kids as if it's some way to get back at him. I call bullshit on being a "good mother." The father hiding himself in court is weird too.

Sadly, this will become even more common once abortion is made inaccessible. Some people are simply not fit to be parents.

Death isn't a penalty. It's an escape. How do people not understand this? She will live for the rest of her life in one of the most difficult and cruel places imaginable. She will wish every day she was dead. That is what she deserves. Death is her getting off easy.

Yet if you asked most convicted if any of them would rather have life in prison or death they'd choose the former almost everytime.

Thier victom didnt get a full life so neither should they.

I imagine the fact that we don't see mass suicides in prison by convicts looking at never getting out kind of hints at that.

Unless we have some sort of "cruel and unusual" prison where convicts would literally opt for death over going there, the death penalty still is king.

American prisons are kinda this though.

Especially the ones in Texas where inmates are dying of heatstroke.

This case is a prime example of a parent treating their children like their property. And in this case choosing to destroying that "property" when asked to give it up.

Anyway, American prisons are awful and designed to punish and kill.

Also abolish the death penalty.

Prisoners are under supervision, and do not have easy access to the means for a relatively quick/painless suicide with a high probability of success.

And it would be wrong to assume that anyone who would rather be dead is going to kill themselves. The barriers are psychological as well as physical.

This. Death is far too good for this woman.

Why is it when someone kills their children, the first thing they try to say is theyre a good parent. Its like no, youre not a good parent, youre the exact opposite of a good parent. Doesnt matter how good you treated them before, the sec you take their life, you earn the title of worst parent.

No, you misunderstand. That's life in an American prison. It's just a fact. I don't despise this woman. Yes, she is objectively evil. But my emotions aren't as fine-tuned as others so I don't have the kind of hatred for her that would lead me to create revenge fantasies. I know she will wish every day she was dead because that's the way American prisons are. Not because I hope for it. But because it will happen regardless of my feelings about it.

You come across as someone who hates philosophy in general, so you mean to tell me you're the one trying to argue in good faith?

In fact, you're probably a religious type who doesn't like hearing that Heaven and Hell don't exist.

Philosophy is fine. Taking one statement as something irrefutable true when it's not is something else. But I don't expect someone quoting Nietzsche in their sn to be open to challenging their notions on philosophy anymore than a devout Jehovah's Witness criticizing Jesus.

Edit-Not religious but I do have a problem with people saying they know what happens after death. No you fucking don't. You may have strong convictions that you are certain of but you don't know.

Frankly you strike me as someone who styles themselves a free and independent thinker who has no real original thoughts of your own.

And if there is some kind of eternal punishment after death, then getting there sooner and bypassing the worldly punishment would just be less punishment. Well, not if we consider + 1= . But we kinda lack the capacity to truly comprehend infinity past the conceptual level.

And to people who are very pro-death penalty, you forget that our legal system requires that inmates be given a right to appeal, which typically takes place over a decade or longer. They're spending an inordinate amount of time behind bars regardless. Also, don't forget that many such individuals have been exonerated in the past.

The reason I disagree with this line of thinking is that I'd rather spend the rest of my life in prison than lose it before natural causes take me.
Don't get me wrong, losing your freedom sucks majorly and even the best maximum security prisons are still purgatory on Earth at best. Even so there are joys that I could experience in prison that I can't if I'm dead or non-existent. Factor in the threat of an execution date being on the table weighing on your conscience and I'm taking life imprisonment over the death penalty anytime.

I'm not arguing for the death penalty here or in general, just disagreeing with the board concensus.
