I was legitimately going on that store page expecting a price of way more than $60. Probably still kind of overpriced but it could be way, way worse with how Squeenix tends to charge. Alright, I'm interested.

Boxed sets like this are usually $100 minimum

There is a 5e version, IIRC. Someone homebrewed it and it became really popular.

Might've changed from back when i played regularly. I remember ~$40 price tags or so, but this was like a decade back. I know WotC in particular has pumped the greed.

WHFRP from FFG pretty much changed all that. The dumb thing is FFG doesn't even make RPGs anymore.

And it (along with the announcement last year I think that D&D 5E was finally getting an official Japanese release) is probably the reason why this even got made. Square-Enix noticed the idea of a Final Fantasy TTRPG was something people wanted, and realized they could make money off of that.

I think SE really underestimates how nerdy its audience is. Or just doesn't get what constitues nerd culture nowadays.

hero quest is a board game, though board games can also get pretty expensive, hero quest was basically a MB + GW collab which brought down the cost a lot

Here's something comparable:

And this isn't even the boxed set that I have that has all the inserts and handouts like passport replicas.

Agreed. If the execs at S-E were more in-tune with their audience, they'd have almost certainly put this out years ago.

I had a little more time and took another look at this.

The $60 version currently on offer seems to be a very dumbed down "starter set" that's designed to be played like a board game. It comes with pre-canned characters to play and the books they're including don't seem to be the full, final versions.

The actual books lower down are just listed as "coming soon" and based on the descriptions are significantly expanded from the versions in the box set.

I'm still somewhat interested but knowing I wouldn't be getting the "full" PHB/DMG definitely sours the pot.
