Ok, there'll be some npcs be all like "herp de doop, soldiers are weak to fire"

and another npc will be like "forget fire, their armour can't withstand electricity!"

...

The actual mechanic is the soldier enemy has a weakness to fire, BUT electricity ignores defense... there is a tradeoff between how much benefit your attack gets you against the enemy based on the difference between your attack and their defense, how (de)buffed they are and if they are guarding.

I couldn't think of a game example of similar situations, but whatevs

oh, SMT is easily understandable.. Nocturne and DDS1 are probably the most well balanced of the entire series.

Dragon Quest!

Yes, here's an example

Metal Slimes

You have your regular attack, which we can ignore cuz it's mid; So your options are Metal Slash which is guaranteed to do at least 1 damage (so you'll need 2~4 rounds to kill), and Hatchet Man and similar skills which have low accuracy but always crit (ignoring defense), which will always kill the slime but has a low success rate

I remember farming metal slimes in dq8. That shit took forever.

I vaguely recall this. I think I went with the axe crit or whatever it was, since as long as you hit it's a kill and you don't end up hitting 3 times and having it run away.
