Canada has a far greater technological and logistical advantage. Canadian troops would absolutely walk circles around Indian troops assuming equally sized deployments.

India obviously has a human numbers advantage, to the point where it very possibly could mobilize a military that outnumbers Canada's full population. Furthermore, India is a nuclear weapons state (although Canada could become one in a matter of weeks).

Neither country would have even a remote chance of a successful land invasion.

It's definitely at least somewhere in the middle.

From Wikipedia: Contemporary criticism of the Indian military have drawn attention to several issues, such as lack of political reform, obsolete equipment, lack of adequate ammunition, and inadequate research and development due to over-reliance on foreign imports. In addition, the lack of a 'strategic culture' among the political class in India is claimed to have hindered the effectiveness of the Indian military. Critics believe these issues hobble the progress and modernisation of the military.

I'd suggest that the technological and logistical advantage holds. I personally wouldn't make the next claim however, that they Canadian troops would 'absolutely' walk circles around Indian troops. I somewhat agree if the deployments are equally sized, but I doubt that. It's difficult to come to a conclusion as the Indian military has typically fought in local wars. The Canadian army, while small, has also done particularly well in conflict.

a 35x population advantage is gonna go a really, really long way in india's favor, assuming this is a 1v1

i feel like people underestimate how populated india is. it's basically equal to the entirety of china in population. they aren't militaristic but it's still a huge advantage vs other secondary powers

They could have a 1,000x manpower advantage. That's not really going to matter if your target is on the other side of the world, and you don't have the logistics to get them there. That's one of the main reasons we beat back the British. The resources it was taking to keep their army fighting here was destroying them economically, and when we started getting aid from the French it was game over.

Is there some kind of tension that could hypothetically lead to this? It seems like such a random pair of countries

What would happen if India got into a war with China? would be a better hypothetical question given their proximity and fairly equal population

Someone in Canada got assassinated. Trudeau blames India. They're sending diplomats back home.

China and India fight a lot.

India primarily uses Russian tech.
Which has been proven utterly worthless in war. Furthermore, India doesn't have an expeditionary force capable of attacking Canada. And Canada has no appetite for war and wouldn't bother actually attacking India.

So most likely such a war would be cold. And the United States and the UK would defend Canada. The USA would not want to lose such a long undefended border.

Also invading Canada is basically impossible. Like invading Russia is just too big.

Also a religious war with Canada would likely cause another great divide in India. Their civil war would see millions dead without ever actually attacking Canada.

Honestly, the manpower advantage counts for a lot less than you think.

OK, you've got a billion Indians, somewhere between a third and half of which are of fighting age (half again if you're restricting yourself to men only). Grand... so, how are you getting them all to Canada? How are you training them, equipping them, keeping them supplied with fuel, food, and ammunition? How are you going to make sure they don't freeze to death in Canada's notoriously unforgiving winters?

The reality is that neither side would be able to prevail in this fight. Canada is so vast and isolated that a land invasion is almost completely impossible. Supply lines would be so incredibly overstretched that it would be impossible to sustain any sort of a dedicated campaign. And the situation isn't any rosier for a Canadian attack on India - India's large population makes them effectively impossible to conquer and that's assuming Canada could even get there; the Canadian military's capabilities for force-projection are infamously poor and Canadian troops rely a lot on American transportation to get them to overseas fights these days. If this is a true 1v1 fight, Canada would be hard pressed to get even a fraction of its troops anywhere near India.

A war between the two countries would be completely laughable because the realities of geography, distance, and population density (on both extremes of the scale) would make any sort of a decisive victory for either side out of the question.
