Also this. Lol...

oh wow no wonder why my bro not getting as much issues with his pc he running a 1080ti + 6900k. both of these components are from 2016-2017 period but i did not see the minimum specs lol
That 6900K+1080Ti combo is a powerful beast! Your brother made the right decision.

Basically if you want to play an AAA game and can't afford to buy the latest and greatest, always get an older flagship rather than a newer midranger. This is true both for PC and mobile gaming.

ZevLoveDOOM posted...
dammit Bethesda, i shouldnt have to upgrade my rig just to play your damn game! lol -_-
I'm sorry but it is what it is TC. You tried to play a game written for flagship-grade processor here (see post #25). A patch with code rewrite might help but don't count on it. It's Bethesda after all.

He's not running a potato for todays standards perhaps?

Updating your rig is a thing, for sure.. but..
According to system requirement, his spec is inadequate. It doesn't matter whether it's generally a potato PC or not :)

Nah, his rig should be fine. For the recommended it says a 3600x and a 2080. His 5600G is better than the 3600X and his 2070 Super is only slightly weaker than the 2080. Bethesda just sucks at optimizing

Yes, the 2070 Super is just slightly below the 2080. You're correct that 5600G is better than the 3600X thanks to its higher ipc (instructions per cycle). I'll need to go into detail for this.

5600G will perform better if the rig can run the game properly in the first place. Let's say 160fps vs 150 fps (numbers just for illustration). If you test them using a series of progressively heavier games, the 5600G will start to lose fps a bit faster than the 3600X will. Funnily enough the most demanding game might actually fare better with the 3600X.

The reason is the PCIe lanes:
5600G has 20 PCIe 3.0 lanes to spare.
3600X has 20 PCIe 4.0 lanes to spare.
https://amd.com/en/products/specifications/compare/processors/11176,8451

For those unaware:
PCIe lanes are connection between CPU, chipset and other components like GPU, SSD, USB/TB, etc. Beside the CPU, motherboard chipset also comes with lanes to use. Needless to say PCIe 4.0 (3600X) is faster than PCIe 3.0 (5600G).

The 2070 Super uses PCIe 3.0 to talk to the CPU so it hardly matters here but what about the mandatory SSD? Even if TC used the latest PCIe 4.0 M.2 NVMe SSD, the PCIe 3.0 lanes in 5600G would cripple its transfer rate. And he can't use the chipset PCIe 4.0 lanes either because the data will flow like this:
SSD <==PCIe 4.0==> Chipset <==PCIe 3.0==> CPU (5600G)
Overall speed: PCIe 3.0

Overall SSD<==>CPU speed: PCIe 3.0 (5600G), PCIe 4.0 (3600X)
This is why I said his specs is inadequate. Of course Bethesda is partly to blame here. They just can't help writing a bloated code

I hope this clears it up. Sorry for such a long post.

okay, so i have 4 disks on my rig (3 being SSD and the other being HDD). turns out that when i first installed the game, i actually installed it on the only HDD disk i have and i didn't even notice at first. heck i couldn't tell them apart and i was so convinced i chose one of the SSDs... lol

either way, i re-installed it on one of my SSDs and it seems to be running fine now! heck even the loadings are faster!

I think they deliberately made nvidia cards run worse because they had a deal with amd.

My sister has rx6800 xt and she can play 3440 x 1440 on high at 60 fps no frame drops.

I have rtx 2080 and I can't even get 60 fps in the cities on medium on 2560 x 1440 resolution. I get about 40 fps.

You know you can just go into Steam and select to move it to a different location, right? Quicker than re-installing.

The game runs something like 35-40% better on AMD GPUs compared to the equivalent Nvidia cards. I don't think they even bothered trying to optimize it for Nvidia hardware.

@thisworld I appreciate you taking the time to give a detailed explanation. Hopefully others find that info helpful (I know we occasionally get topics about what cpu/gpu to buy).

But it turns out that TC had the game installed on his HDD afterall

Glad you sorted it out. I was wrong then about your specs. I apologize for being alarmist. Let me tell you something about SSD setup for gaming rig:

1.) For consumer Ryzen the primary SSD slot (M2.1) is a bit faster than the rest because that slot is wired directly to the CPU, bypassing the chipset. Intel doesn't have this.

2.) Please don't run too many SSDs if you can help it. Each SSD needs its own lanes and the amount of lanes is limited. If you go past the limit (example: lots of SSD + lots of USB); your rig will throttle the GPU by freeing up half of its lanes to be used by the SSD/USB. You don't want this.

Happy gaming TC.

Correct. My whole point is I dont need skills to turn on my PS5, and that suits the level of effort I want to put into turning on my videogames for relaxation. Thats just me though.
For the vast majority of things its exactly the same amount of effort. Click Install. Click Play when its done.

Citing a Pokmon rom hack is fucking weird, as you have to go WAY out of your way to do that on a console, and as lazy as youve admitted to being, it sounds more like youre complaining that something on PC is too hard for you when on console you just cant do it period.

Haha it's okay Yeah, I did write that essay on assumption that TC's info was correct. It's basically the only explanation left for why his recommended specs couldn't run Starfield. Well I hope someone at least got something out of that
