Theyre the best 3D Sonic games but the best 3D Sonic game can only ever be fine because true Sonic gameplay does not translate well to 3D.

True Sonic gameplay in 1-3&K/Mania has intricate and rewarding platforming, level traversal and obstacle overcoming, where the 3D games are just FAST FAST FAST HOMING HOMING HOMING until you win.

Sonic controls fine in 3D. Dont let Yahtzee fool you. The 3D games have lots of problems but its lazy and dishonest to say the problem is that theyre in 3D.

Sonic 06 is closer to Adventure 3 than Heroes because it brought back hub worlds. Heroes is closer to a traditional side scroller brought into 3D (and given worse controls) since you go from stage to stage.

I replayed Sonic Adventure when it came out on XBLA. I hated the fishing as a kid and it prevented me from finishing the game back then and my assessment as an adult is that it actually sucks so bad that it brings down the rest of the game and Knuckles levels weren't all that hot either.

SA2 is still pretty fresh in my head. Still had Rogue/Knuckles to contend with, but I can deal with everyone else's levels. Trying to get completion was a pain, I couldn't manage before we lost the Gamecube (I had Battle)

Neither are as good as any of the Genesis platformers. I think SA2 is at least better than Sonic CD though...

The 2D sonic games have peaked in terms of gameplay. So frankly there isn't anything more they can do with it compared to 3D.

And while that may not seem like a issue now just like megamen the games will eventually become stale and the fans bored in time.

Sonic Adventure would have been perfect for its time if it wasn't for big. It was a good foray to 3d along with a fun story and multiple characters.
I would literally keep replaying that game if it wasn't for big. It's not too hard of a game but offers enough challenge to keep you coming back. Then you have those emblems to collect.

both are fun games with a lot of heart and soul and an experimental attitude. the dreamcast was a home for some of the most creative stuff coming out of japan at the time and not long after its death was the point where dev costs really began to ramp up and the ability to try new things began to become infeasible

unfortunately they are also very flawed games with bugs and unfun segments. SA2 honestly more than 1, its attempts to expand on the shooter and treasure hunter gameplay from the first game were pretty disastrous at points

The hedgehog levels from the adventures were peak Sanic. Fun, speedy movement, but not generally not forced excessive speed to the point where you couldn't react to hazards. Boost games and every 2d game let you go fast, but if you do, you often can't see what's coming up in time to deal with it smoothly.

And no amount of Knuckles/Rouge/Tails/Eggman levels will ever be as unbearable as four levels of fishing with Big and I will die on this (Pumpkin) Hill. The shooter levels were at least kinda fun, even if they're not as interesting as the hedgie levels.

SA1 made most of the alternate gameplay styles (as in, everything that isn't a speed level) control decently. SA2 took a step back by making emerald hunting way too large and the shooting stages control clunkily.

and the Adventure games were not just fast in the Sonic and Shadow stages.

Generations was the closest to translating that gameplay into 3D I would say. Sonic Adventure had the momentum physics but the level design didn't take advantage of it.

SA1 had a surprising number of alternate pathways and hidden stuff. The problem was without a free camera a lot of it was too hard to see.

The only SA2 level that comes close to that kind of complexity is Final Rush.

There's probably some stuff I never knew about, tbh. It was only recently that I found out about a big shortcut in Final Egg.

And yeah the final speed stages in SA2 were pretty expansive, forgot about those.

At best the Sonic Adventure games are like 1/3 a good game, 2/3s bad games.

Good: Sonic, SA1 Tails, Shadow
Bad: Literally the rest of it.

That isn't to say there isn't a lot to like. The games are dripping with soul. The music is extremely charming, if not equally cheesy. And when the game does work, it's a blast.

My hottest take though is the Chao garden sucked. You mostly just grinded for resources and then sat around doing nothing, all so you could compete in undercooked mini games that required no skill.

Even something as simple as going around behind one of the hills in Emerald Coast and finding an extra life is closer to the nuance of the 2D games than anything in SA2 (again, besides Final Rush). I love SA2 to death but it's very linear.

That's not inherently a bad thing, just a departure from what a lot of people feel made Sonic 2 and especially Sonic 3 & Knuckles so damn amazing. But short and sweet linear levels like Metal Harbor work very well too.

Sonic Heroes is passable if you practice enough to make up for the slippery control. It's not spectacular, and wouldn't be even if you fixed the controls, but it's still not the complete abyss that the next two games would come to represent.

I'll give you that some of the emerald stages were probably too big. Death Chamber and Mad Space were both tedious (fuck you spherical planet). But the stages were also more interesting than in 1. There were unique things and places to find. It wasn't just "glide in a circle around this room until you run into a randomly placed gem". There was platforming and exploration in the equation. Once you're already bored of treasure hunting gameplay, that does become just another obstacle, but idk, it's more interesting (when you aren't desperately trying to get Rouge to run in a straight line while stuck on the bottom of the goddamn spherical planet).

I also think SA2 makes non-hedgie levels more bearable by alternating between the three gameplay styles in the story. You find the emerald pieces, then you're rewarded with a speed level or at least something that isn't another emerald stage. And you get that without quitting Knuckles' story and switching to a completely different part of Sonic's story.

Also it's been a while since I played 1, but I remember Big being much less pleasant to control than the mechs. Jumping around the ice level or trying to get out of the water ever was annoying as hell. The only saving grace was that it was only four levels and probably unnecessary if you already happened to know where Froggy was.

Man sega could have made bank if they focused on chao a little more. They were too cute with interesting and unique mechanics thrown in. The best part of them was if you were bored of playing as sonic and his pals, the chao ended up being a great distraction. They could have easily created a spin off and gave the chao more unique mechanics and lore that doubles back into the sonic adventure games and could have made so much money off of that.
