Option 1) Everyone is ugly.
Option 2) You (the producer) are a pedophile.

To the bulldogs of moral guardianship, 17 might as well be 7. It doesn't matter if you hire a 19-year-old to play a 17-year-old. If the character's canon age is below 18, you are a pedophile. Even if you say that you've written the character for a teenage target demographic, we all know that you really find them attractive.

So here's an idea. Let's just skip over high school and make everyone college aged in stories aimed at young people. That way, we don't have to worry about the "unfair sexualization" of a "literal child" if the female lead's looks are somewhat analogous to what we consider attractive in fully grown adult women.

Aren't there a ton of books, movies, and TV shows that feature romance between high school age students?

This is dumb on so many levels.

First off, don't be a drama queen. Not everybody gets all worked up about these things to have to resort to your lazy absolutes.

I'm working on a story and I have a suspicion that a publisher will want me to tweak it so that it can be released as YA fiction.

I was thinking about what an age shift from the 21-to-23 age range to a 17-year-old age group would do to the characters if it was adapted to the screen. Either the three young women in the story will all dress like April O'Neil from the recent animated Ninja Turtles movie or I'll be accused of sexualizing minors. I know that, as an author, I wouldn't have any control over what happens in an adaptation. But I feel like "the person who wrote it" makes a good scapegoat should any controversy come up.

Can we point out how fucking weird it is that there's an exemption according to TC as long as your teenagers are hideous?

Used to be. Most of the modern ones either make the characters ugly (usually animated) or else change the age group to college age.

I remember a poster saying a 17 year old actress was hot. He got called a pedophile.

But he was also 17.

I think posters here forget that there are minors on the site. Less than there were for obvious reasons. But they still so exist.

Hold on.

You are worried about the reception of the adaption of a story that you haven't finished writing yet?

What I think is that you are getting way ahead of yourself. Or maybe you just have opinions about the portrayal of April O'Neil.

Yup. And especially not in any prominent way. Despite what the "outrage culture" peeps would like you to believe.

Can I just say how sad it is that April O'Neil peaked in the 80s series and has been worse every iteration.
