I only ever played 2 and 3. But 2 is really good. Most people say it's the best game in the series. Some say it's the only one worth playing even

Battles are in real time. You run around on the battle screen kinda like an action rpg

Star Ocean 2 is very good and to many the peak of the series.

And no, you don't need to play Star Ocean 1. You get a limited run down of it if you start as Claude because his dad is in Star Ocean 1, but it's not relevant to the story of 2.

While Star Ocean 2 is a direct sequel to Star Ocean 1 the events in it really don't matter as Strider stated outside of Ronixis being Claude's father. Two was awesome back then. I'll say the remake is probably going to be a lot better than the original because while I loved the look and general feel of the Playstation title. I have played the combat in the whatever amount of recent years and it's really slow plus spells pause the action. Also there are random encounters and a lot of those old rpg sensibilities.

2 is supposedly the best in the series, but oddly its one of the three I havent played (I played 1, 3, and 4, skipped the bad one, and havent gotten to the new one yet).

I admit to being turned off by dual protagonists, as I feel like you have to play the game twice to see everything, and adulting sucks.

A minor pet peeve I have is that you cant get every recruitable character in one playthrough. But, the game is totally solid.

yes
but some recruitable characters are missable without a guide (there is one point where you can get one of 2 characters but it's easy to end up with neither)
and in the battles ...WATCH OUT FOR THE MINING CARTS! (major pain at one point in a game)

one problem I had is I triggered one event towards the end which caused the final battle to be a lot harder - I ended up going back to an earlier save to get a normal version of the battle.

That never bothered me because of the dual protagonists and you can plan out who to recruit in each session, but I can see why it could be a bit frustrating not being able to get everyone in one go.
