I know, I know, the season is more than halfway over! Was busy and only just got around to watching the first 5 episodes.

My overall thought is that I'm enjoying it. Fun to see all the various characters from the books finally showing up on screen. I think they've done a pretty good job of hitting the notes from the books that I remember, accepting that there's changes needed for a tv show adaptation.

I just hope they do a better job sticking the finale than they did with season 1.

Gonna dive into the fan response now and find out what they're all outraged about...

I haven't watched the most recent episode yet, but it's been enjoyable so far. Episode 3 in particular is excellent. My main complaint is that I have no clue what the heck they're doing with Mat this season.

Wish they hadn't unceremoniously killed off Uno like that though.

Yeah, I wasn't expecting that either. At the same time, it's understandable as you can't carry the gigantic number of characters the books have all the way through a tv series.

Has (maybe spoilers?) Elayne been introduced yet and have they done a good job with her character?

I've only watched a few episodes of season 1 as of now

She's introduced early on in season 2, but she hasn't done much yet.

I'm waiting to see if it ends better than season 1 before giving it a try.

Oh, they've introduced Aviendha already? I'm always good with more of her.

I thought Episode 6 was pretty good. Somewhat brutal to watch but such an important one for THAT character.

A few random thoughts:
  • At least they're not short changing us on these episodes, as they give a full hour of content. I feel like Game of Thrones episodes were usually 10 minutes shorter than that most of the time. More to cover in WoT though so that makes sense.
  • Perhaps the best thing I can say is that it's getting me excited again, like when I was reading the books the first time, where you just want to keep going. Naturally I already know what's going to happen, but still. The Great Hunt was the book that got me addicted to the series and it's working again here for the same reasons. Eye of the World was a fairly standard fantasy story. The Great Hunt is when the storytelling got genuinely rich and intriguing, as the possibility space really opened up. It's the same thing here, with each story feeling meaningful and watching/wondering how they'll tie together in the end.

I remember thinking book 2 was one of the weaker ones in the early parts of the series. I guess I don't like the Seanchan plotline much though.

It was a concensus amongst my friends that I got to read WoT that the climax of book 2 would be incredible to see done well visually, and will be a make-or-break moment with the show. Bets on whether it'll be able to stick the landing this time?

Itll definitely be better than Season 1, lol. I think the show runner is keenly aware of needing to nail the climax for this season, so hopefully theyre able to get it done. Respecting for the balance of effects and budgets and all that.

They've already been foreshadowing that they intend to play book 2's climax straight (or at least more than book 1's)

One thing that's weirding me out about the show is just hearing the pronunciation of all these names, items, place, etc. Falme being one syllable (rather than FAL-ME), a'dam being a capital A sound rather than "open your mouth and say ah", etc. Hell, even with Seanchan I heard it in my head with no h sound, rather than as Shawn-chan.

I listened to the audiobooks so I got used to the way they were pronounced there. Tar Valon in particular keeps throwing me off because it's Tar VAL-on in the books and it's Tar Va-LON in the show.

Episode 7 is in the books!

Not as good as the last episode, of course. Mostly just setting the groundwork for the season finale.

Also, Lanfear (gah damn!)

Overall a marked improvement over Season 1.

I have to say I enjoyed most of S2, but the finale irked me in a few ways.
Like let Rand have some of his moments already!

I finished season 2 today. Thought it was generally pretty good. There's a few scenes from the books that didn't make appear in the show that I really wanted to see (Ingtar's confession, Elayne and Nynaeve rescuing Egwene), but I still the thought the show worked pretty well even with those and other changes. Also liked it somewhat more than season 1. The damane plotline and surprisingly Mat blowing the horn were both great in the show.

Speculation for next season (spoilers for the show and for books 1-4)
--So are they planning on just cutting out book 3 entirely? I think that could probably work overall, and that's the only explanation I can think of for Ishamael seemingly dying here. That would also retroactively explain why they introduced Aviendha here if we're going straight to the Aiel Waste next season.
