Tbh I sometimes wonder if it would have been better if it wassexual abuse because hardly anyone took it seriously even though there was still a lot of trauma, as much or even maybe more than when I experienced SA. The cops wouldn't let my mom press charges. He abused me and several other kids but only had his license suspended (again, he already had a record) and was back teaching in two years. I was bullied by other teachers for speaking out. There was no sense of justice whatsoever. Even the local news lost interest once they found out he was "only" slapping kids and "just" choking them. My big issue is that a lot of the teachers I've interacted with as an adult very casually make comments about violence towards kids, stuff like "Ugh I just wanted to strangle so and so today!" And I don't think it necessarily means they are violent or abusive towards their students or ever will but it's just still a really gross thing for me to experience. And it's not just one or two teachers I've heard this kind of thing from. It's a lot. Like, a lot a lot. I've un-followed teachers on social media because they make cutesy videos where the punchline is harming a student. These posts get hundreds of thousands of likes. I've even seen some of the teachers here making comments like that in topics about unruly students. I can recognize it from a distance as the same kind of venting everyone does about the frustrating aspects of their jobs but being on the other side of it, having the entire education system enabling him to do this then defending him, calling me a liar, downplaying what he did, and then essentially letting him get away with it has left me with no tolerance for anything tangentially related to that. I know not all teachers make those jokes but it's been enough of them that I don't want to take the risk of finding out they're like that. And it's not just for my sake. I know teaching (especially in the USA) is a shitty job and I don't want to police the way someone copes with the stress, even if I don't approve of how they do it. I've been in relationships like that in the past and I know it doesn't go well.
