There's a metroidvania that I absolutely adore called Rabi Ribi. On the surface, it looks like weeb shit. Deep down though, there's a sprawling metroidvania, and mechanically, aesthetically, musically, and gameplay wise, one of the best games I ever played. It's also soul crushingly difficult, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

There's a spiritual successor supposed to be coming out sometime this year called Tevi. Can't wait for it.

I would describe Momodora: Reverie Under The Moonlight the same way. Maybe not soul crushingly difficult, though the bosses are consistently tough.
