Alabama woman hung racially offensive dolls on Black neighbors fence to get them to move

A south Alabama woman is going to federal prison after she hung racially offensive homemade dolls on her Black neighbors fence in an attempt to get them to move.

Cheryl Lynn Pytleski, 64, pleaded guilty to violating the civil rights of her neighbors, Middle District of Alabama U.S. Attorney Sandra Stewart announced Thursday.
Pytleski, of Chancellor, was sentenced to 12 months in prison.

The incident happened in Dale County on Oct. 18, 2019.
According to authorities, Pytleski hung racially offensive homemade dolls on the fence of her next-door neighbors, an African American family, in an attempt make the family move away.

Pytleski in April pleaded guilty to a criminal violation of the Fair Housing Act in March of this year.

In her plea agreement, Pytleski specifically admitted to using the threat of force to intimidate her neighbors because of their race and because they were occupying a dwelling next to her.

A person violates the Fair Housing Act if he or she uses force, or threatens the use of force, to willfully injure, intimidate, or interfere with, any person because of his or her race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, or national origin, who is or has been engaged in the selling, purchasing, renting, financing, occupying, or contracting or negotiating for the sale, purchase, rental, financing, or occupation of any dwelling.

The 12-month sentence, ordered on September 6, 2023, is the maximum allowed under the federal statute. There is no parole in the federal system.
The FBI and the Ozark Police Department investigated the case. Assistant United States Attorney Brett J. Talley prosecuted.

I do not want to know. I feel for the victims. I am lucky in that my neighbors have enough class not to display any antagonism.

I want to see the perp rehabilitated instead of punished.

She's 64, dude. This is who she is, period. What do you think she did when she was younger?

She's only a 64 year old girl, and we all make mistakes sometimes. Who hasn't accidentally tried to racially intimidate their neighbors into vacating their homes at some point in the 64 years of their youth? Have you people no sympathy for people and the trials and tribulations they go through in their life's learning journey?

If a teenager or young adult does dumb shit like this, they need to be rehabilitated and options like community service are valid.

When it's someone who's had their whole life to grow out of it but are still doing it, harsh penalties are the way to go.

A big part of that is that the former most likely thinks they're being edgy and funny and just need to realize no, it's not funny; while the latter knows exactly what they are doing and without a doubt had genuine malicious intent.

Mugshot also shows that there isn't really any remorse and you do sometimes see it with other MAGAs who did something similar like that one who harassed a family at a beach.

Yeah this is what I'm thinking too. That would definitely be unsettling to see black dolls being lynched on your fence.

All she had to do was say she didnt like the neighbors because they were loud or they had ugly landscaping, and she would have got a $100 fine.

She fucked around with bigoted intimidation and now she's finding out the consequences.

Unfortunately she isn't likely to learn any lesson with only a year, however it was the maximum punishment. At least that felony (I think?) will follow her around the rest of her life.

Thats for legal and mental health professionals to decide, not you. That said it sounds like someone like her wont be able to help but spout her hateful shit anyway so theyll quickly realise she isnt remorseful.

I mostly meant the judge, after weighing the cases presented by both parties. My fate was decided earlier this year by a judge, after all. A judge who obviously believed my rehab would better served in the community.

And not every legal system is as godawful as Americas. Australias isnt perfect, but its a hell of a lot better.

He's actually at least half correct. Prison is meant to protect society from the person. "Lock them up and throw away the key because fuck them!" is a fascist mindset that any mental health professional will tell you is unhelpful.

And I've given no opinion on this woman, her crime, or how it should have been handled, so do not try that angle with me. I just happen to have recently learned a few things about the justice system that armchair court of public opinion types like you and 95% of the internet don't understand or acknowledge.
