A kid dying from exposure rather than having her abusive dad put the sticks to her is pretty heavy for young kids.

Yes. It is heavy.
It teaches kids for sympathy and compassion. It will make kids wanted to help others in need.
If a kid is unfazed with the story, you can immediately see that something is wrong with them.
