I haven't messed with it myself but doesn't it have scanning? That's a goal for exploring planets if you want to. You have a bunch of aliens and plants to scan for a checklist. No idea if you get descriptions though.

If people want meaningful space exploration, they need to play Outer Wilds.

Yeah the planets aren't huge but that's a good thing because every single one of them is unique and handcrafted. The game manages to be fun without combat. Every aspect of environment has a interesting way to approach them.

Everyone says the best way to experience the game is to just jump into it, and the less you know about it the better because the discovery about it is the best part. So spoilers for one planet: there's a double planet that acts like an hourglass. The sand is drained off one planet and ciphon to the other which has caverns in it and you can only explore them when the sand is on the other planet.

People digging into the files are saying it's a mess in there among other issues like with how they render environments, it's all backwards and unoptimized. They had better methods before but decided not to use them for whatever reasons and opted for extremely less efficient ways here.

The whole game is almost like Downtown Boston in Fallout 4 if anyone remembers what a goddamn disaster that place was and still is to some extent. A mod fixed it but didn't come out for a long time.
