I know it has like ten thousand episodes and I know I would never get through it all, but is it worth getting into anyway? If anything, I would want to watch enough where I would be able to compare and contrast with the first season of the live-action version.

And on a side note, how about Full Metal Alchemist? It's another critically acclaimed anime that's on my radar. How does it compare with One Piece? Better, worse?

it's worth it, but don't be afraid to take your time with it

FMAB is also great and pretty short at that, and FMA 03 is good on its own right even if divisive

I would watch FMA 03 from intro until they get to "the" first town (you'll know) and then swap over to brotherhood.

If anything, Bro tends to really gloss over the backstory and intro with only like 10% of the grim atmosphere that made 03 good imo

The pacing isn't slow at all in the beginning. It does take some time to get hooked and get into what the show is all about.

They are both great stories that everyone should try enjoying.

Fullmetal alchemist brotherhood is perfectly paced. And the English dub is preferable to the Japanese one since it's in a European setting it just makes sense. Also the English voice actors are actually really good.

As for One Piece, the anime is terribly paced. Although you could start watching it just to get into it and once you feel the glacial pace, switch over to the COLORED manga and enjoy some gorgeous art.

I'm almost exclusively in anime watcher but colored manga has given me an appreciation for manga that I never could have otherwise. And it helps to contextualize some things in some panels which would otherwise be unclear in black and white. My go-to example is cartoon style fighting where bodies are entangled and you can't tell who's winning or losing because it's just a bunch of black and white and bodies drawn in similar style.

If I had to pick, I'd pick FMA any day of the week. It's an expertly crafted story with a clear beginning, middle and end compared to One Piece which somehow needs hundreds of episodes/chapters to even get a semblance of an actual overarching plot going.

The manga is great. Its an addicting story that Ive been following for 18 years and I still get excited about a chapter releasing each week. I cant think of another series that I havent gotten bored of.

that being said I dont think the anime is a great adaption especially once the manga chapter to episode ratio becomes less than 1

It's fucking Treasure Island with powers. Serialized stories are nothing new and can be fantastic. See The Count of Monte Cristo, also very similar to OP.

Anyway, the first ~300 episodes are great. After that, read the manga. Skip filler throughout, it's not bad just not canon.

I have had a really weird history with one piece

I wasn't compelled to read anymore after stopping in Alabasta. Then I took a decade long break from it, and started watching from where I left off and for some reason from that point on I was hooked. Jumped over to the colored manga because Skypiea was going on forever.

I think One Piece is something you have to want to enjoy. I don't think it's something you can like if you're you are going in with no motivation to experience the story.

Dont watch One Piece. The anime pace will end up in the gutter. If you really are interested, read the manga and watch the episodes of the fights you like.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is the accurate adaptation, but many people also find the 03 anime enjoyable. Watch Brotherhood, and if you want more, then watch 03 just to see what that anime did differently.

totalnerdken posted...

It does a decent job of condensing the arcs for the first 50 or so episodes.

My post may contain very minor spoilers, so I just blacked it all out after the caviat.

I don't recommend you skip the first 50 episodes, but if you choose to skip to where the live action left off. I recommend at least watch starting at the Arlong fight, not after it. There's a Fishman there that becomes an important character later on in the series that was completely ommitted from the live action. It's just so you know the character exists. Also know that in the Anime, Arlong first meets Luffy at Arlong Park, Arlong never went to the restaurant in the Anime. I just say this because there might be some dialogue that's confusing without that in mind. There's also a scene at Arlong Park, involving Zoros injury that further shows how badass he is, that was sadly ommitted from the live action.

Also, that scummy mouse themed marine (I forgot his name) says something along the lines of slavery being abolished... This is definitely not true in the anime.

It is true. Officially at least. The slave trade is illegal but still goes on.

What??? Edward never really shows much combat expertise. Brotherhood is the complete opposite of your typical shounen. In fact that's something I look back fondly about it. It was never about Edward training to get stronger or him getting a power boost or something. Most of the story works in all the characters and everybody contributes something.

Maybe you should cite some specific examples rather than being vague as possible. And it's a bit amusing how you're always quick to blame nostalgia when someone else prefers what came before, yet somehow that doesn't apply to you.

But I know what you're referring to with him being able to heal himself. You seem to completely miss both series knocking you over the head with equivalent exchange. Ed straight up states he likely shortened his lifespan doing so.
Both series show he understands how the human body works and what it is composed of. He traded a portion of his own lifespan in order to heal himself. It doesn't need to be stated several episodes prior he might be able to do so when we've been told quite clearly again and again how alchemy works and what Ed is capable of.

No, Xing's alchemy was treated different and more focused on healing. Manipulating biological matter with Amestris' alchemy is very notoriously shown to be possible with Nina and Alexander. The thing that's shown to be impossible is bringing the dead back to life.

She wasn't referring to the alchemy law of equivalent exchange with that speech. She was referring to Ed and Al viewing it as a way of life. She's basically saying "life isn't fair" using the law of equivalent exchange as a metaphor. At least that's how I've always perceived it

Nah, that was a thing long before Full Metal Alchemist came around; the original Dragon Ball was much earlier among countless others. I'd say it's actually the more modern tendency not to milk a popular show/manga for all its worth.

I don't consider FMAB to be short at all. 62 episodes is lengthy or mid size compared to shonen mangas like dragon ball, bleach and one piece.

I thought Monster on Netflix was long.

But anyway, pacing wise FMAB is perfect and not anything filler worthy.

To TC, I recommend watching the first Full Metal Alchemist anime at some point too, after brotherhood. It's much shorter and It deviates from brotherhood at maybe halfway it's series. It's not as good as Brotherhood, but it's pretty interesting. FMB is canon, while when the first anime was made, the manga wasn't done.. so it went off rails.

The anime has terrible pacing, you're better off just reading the manga and watching clips of Sakuga moments on youtube from the anime. There are literal episodes where they try stretching a single chapter of One Piece to a full 30 min episode. It was very painful to watch.
