Musk agreed to let Ukraine use Starlink soon after Russia invaded in early 2022, and Isaacsons book describes how conflicted he was that his companys technology was being used to launch attacks. How am I in this war? Musk told Isaacson. Starlink was not meant to be involved in wars. It was so people can watch Netflix and chill and get online for school and do good peaceful things, not drone strikes.

eh, makes sense.

but that's also why one dude shouldn't have that kind of power

Charged with what exactly?

Can't stand the man, but they're his satellites.

Whether we should be in a position where one man of dubious judgement controls such a resource is another question of course.

It's definitely true. He admitted it. Said he didn't want his stuff used for war. It was BS, but that was his reasoning.

Musk in 2022 secretly ordered his engineers to turn off Starlinks connectivity along the Crimean coast in order to thwart a Ukrainian attack on Russias naval fleet, according to an excerpt of Walter Isaacsons long-anticipated Elon Musk obtained by CNN. Musk made the decision out of a fear that the attack would lead Russia to retaliate with nuclear weapons, according to Isaacson.

The Ukrainian subs rigged to blow up the Russian ships lost connectivity and washed ashore harmlessly after Musk disconnected their service, Isaacson writes.

I mean, everyone on the West involved (I guess I mean leaders of various nations, from European to US) are nervous about just how far we can arm Ukraine and attack into Russia without a nuclear response.

It's the reason why Biden (and others) have been very very reluctant to provide long range weapons.

Yes, but Musk was worried about them eventually being used to launch attacks on areas that Russia took years ago that weren't actually fighting in the current war yet (ex. Crimea).

The attack was meant purely to intercept Russian ships planning to attack Ukraine, yes.

Maybe that should've been made clear to Musk when he raised his concerns? Instead of just telling him to fuck off and calling him a Russian propagandist while he's literally supporting Ukraine. There are ways to handle a disagreement between allies, and that wasn't it.

Obviously Musk is more in the wrong, but the situation was avoidable entirely by not outright provoking a dude who's providing voluntary aid.

Sounds like he knew it was for a military operation but decided he didn't want to be part of escalating.

And instead was part of escalating when the Russian fleet he was so concerned for bombed civilians. So for all his desires to not look like a Russian shill, guess who he happily decided to help murder civilians because he felt he knew more than actual military.

He knew about the fleet being targeted but necessarily that an attack was imminent otherwise. For all he knew they could've just been in reserve.
