to survive. Earth the Planet, mind you. That's a crazy fucking distance the explosion full of neutrinos and radiation travel to kill nearly everything in its path.

If a Super Nova exploded today that was 49 light years away, it would take 49 years for it to reach us (baring that's limited by the speed of light).

When we look through a telescope at stars, we're looking into the past though. Luckily, no super nova star candidates are that close to us. O-o.

There are so many things in space that we could see coming (to kill us) years in advance and yet be unable to do anything about.

Gamma ray bursts for example.
