Massachusetts teen dies after eating spicy tortilla chip

A 14-year-old boy from Massachusetts died unexpectedly a short time after he ate a particularly spicy tortilla chip, leaving his family grieving and searching for answers.

Harris Wolobah died on Friday, said a statementfrom officials at the Worcester public school district where the boy studied.

Harriss cause of death had not been determined on Tuesday as results of his autopsy remained pending, but his relatives fear that complications from eating an extremely spicy tortilla chip from the manufacturer Pacqui were a factor, according to an online GoFundMe campaignmeant to benefit his family.

The campaigns organizer, who describes herself as a cousin of Harris, wrote: The pain our family is experiencing is unimaginable.

Pacqui did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The company promotes a one chip challenge and invites consumers to publish videos of themselves on social media eating the product derived from two of the worlds hottest peppers.

Harriss mother, Lois Wolobah, told the local television news outlet WBTS that her son was given a Pacqui chip by a fellow student at Doherty Memorial high school in Worcester, Massachusetts. Harris soon had an intense stomachache and went to the school nurse, who called his mother to pick him up.

Harris felt some relief after going home, but then he lost consciousness as he prepared to go try out for a basketball team, Lois Wolobah reportedly said.

After his brother found him passed out, Harris was brought to a nearby hospital. He was pronounced dead there.

Worcester police confirmed that they were among the authorities investigating Harriss death, WBTS reported. But officers stopped short of saying whether they were investigating any activities beyond the Harriss consumption of a Pacqui chip as a possible contributor to his death.

Lois Wolobah subsequently told WBTS that she believes her son should have been sent to the hospital instead of to his home after going to the nurses office. And she said she spoke to the outlet so that families become aware of warnings associated with the Pacqui chips.

The individually wrapped tortilla chips are made from the Carolina Reaper and Scorpion chili peppers, which are two of the spiciest in the world, information from Pacqui shows. Pacqui warns consumers that the chips are for adults only and should be kept away from children or anyone who has allergies or sensitivities to spicy food.

The Pacqui-pushed one chip challenge is popular on TikTok, where users have posted videos of themselves eating the treats and seeing how long they can forego drinking or eating something meant to neutralize the spicy sensation it provokes.

Challenge participants mostly report tears or stomach pain. But the challenge did draw unflattering headlines when first responders in Georgia reported that they had to go to a local high school to treat a student who tried to participate in the one chip challenge.

Several students in Californias Bay Area who reported getting sick after attempting the challenge also reportedly prompted their school district to give parents notice about the activity.

The statement from officials in charge of Harriss school described him as a rising star. A note on his familys GoFundMe campaign which had raised more than $22,000 as of Tuesday said that he was an intelligent, quirky and incredibly talented young man who loved video games and playing basketball.

Harris was a light that lit up the room with his presence and subtle charm, the note on the site added.

Have to wait to see the autopsy before I start throwing down my thoughts on it.

It isn't really tiktoks fault. People have been doing stuff like this for a LONG time. Does tiktok get it out there more, sure but its not its fault. Sorry for the loss of the kid, it is tragic but as others have said, he probably had an underlying condition. Most waivers for spice challenges make it clear if you have heart or stomach issues then you should not do it.

Any time I buy something super spicy there's a very large warning on the label that basically says straight up "this is dangerous, consume it at your own risk" pacqui isn't the only one making super hot shit.

And the really sad thing is the death was easily preventable. You can neutralize the capsaicin molecules with dairy fat. Giving him some fatty yogurt would probably been all that was needed to save his life.

Wouldn't surprise me if it happened because of a Thunderclap headache.

What basically happens with thunderclap headaches is that the blood vessels in the brain constrict in reaction to something spicy enough to be WELL out of its league. It's very rare, but as you've already noticed, it does happen. If you feel a massive headache hit you after something like this, swallow your pride, and get to the ER immediately. No ifs, ands, or buts.

If you get in over your head eating something spicy in a non-emergency way, get some milk, take a mouthful, swig it, and spit. Repeat as many times as it takes. Do NOT swallow it. Otherwise, it goes downstream.

I've never heard of spicy food causing these. Also doesn't even sound like it's what happened. He was getting ready to go to a basketball tryout. If he had a thunderclap headache he would have been in intense pain. The account of the story says he was feeling better just before he died.

Also there's a chance it might not even have anything to do with the chip. Kid could have just had an aneurysm.

I didn't know shit could be spicy enough to kill someone, jesus.
I thought the same so I did a little bit of googling.

Mice and rats dosed orally with 96 to 200 mg/kg capsaicin demonstrated immediate salivation, convulsions, reddening of the skin, and dypsnea, or labored breathing. Animals either died within 26 minutes of dosing, or showed no further symptoms 24 hours after dosing.22
http://npic.orst.edu/factsheets/archive/Capsaicintech.html

A lethal dose of 50% of mice is around 22 mg/lb. Since this kid is probably around 120ish pounds. A chip having potentially 2640 mg of capsaicin could be lethal. Of course 22 mg/lb is just enough to kill half of a test group of mice and we extrapolate that to humans. It's possible 12 mg/lb is enough to kill 25% of mice. This kid could've been on the lower end of the curve. But the odds of a chip have 2.6 literal grams of capsaicin on it sounds insane. How much does a really hot pepper have in capsaicin?

Let's take a look at a scientific paper that measures this.
https://mendelnet.cz/pdfs/mnt/2017/01/96.pdf
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/9/5/3/AABn_6AAE0GB.jpg
A carolina reaper pepper without seeds has 81 mg/g. That's insanely high. A pepper can weigh like what 4-5 grams according to google? Usually spicy peppers are dehydrated however. So looking up dried pepper weight you can get 1 - 2 grams. Of course this is dehydrated which concentrates flavor assumedly. Does this paper mention the peppers are dehydrated?
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/9/5/4/AABn_6AAE0GC.png
Yes it does.
I'm curious about this dihydrocapsaicin, does it make things more spicy? Does the double bond in the chain make the capsaicin more potent?
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/9/5/5/AABn_6AAE0GD.png
-https://drugs.ncats.io/drug/W9BV32M08A
No apparently not. So let's ignore the amount of dihydrocapsaicin.
(looking more into it while editing this post BIG MISTAKE)
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/9/5/6/AABn_6AAE0GE.png

So let's theorize how much could this kid have ingested of capsaicin.
One Chip weighs about 6 grams.
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/9/5/7/AABn_6AAE0GF.jpg
We see it there, and oh? We know for a fact it has carolina reaper. Ok. How much does a normal chip weigh then in comparison? If we have a normal chip weight we can then compare how much carolina reaper dust is on the thing. Going by a tostitos chip 28gs for 7 chips which are roughly the same size we have a 4 gram chip. So we have 2-3 grams of carolina reaper and scorpion pepper dust on these things.

But we already have numbers on how much capsaicin a carolina reaper has. 2-3 grams of pure carolina dust would yield about...243 mgs of capsaicin (about 100mgs of dihydrocapsaicin). That's not enough. So I'm not sure what happened to him. Even assuming on the higher end, he couldn't have ingested any more than like 300-500 mgs of capsaicin. Even assuming higher amounts of capsaicin and him weighing less you'd need about 1.8 grams of capsaicin to be lethal for an 80 pound boy. I can't even get close to that and I'm sure the ld50 curves don't really reach that point. He must've been a statistical anomaly for him to have been killed by "spiciness."

TaylorHeinicke posted...

https://twitter.com/DailyLoud/status/1699142013684175300
SIXTEEN?

Well 16*243 is about 3888 mgs of capsaicin from carolina dust. It's on the higher end, but that is actually lethal dose range. I doubt someone eats 16 of those. Who opens 16 boxes and rips them up? Must've been a serious dare.

If he had a rare allergic reaction to one chip I'd believe that more than him eating 16 in a row. Like his esophagus just closed up and he couldn't breath but the reporting sucks on this. Especially with no one finding out he ate 16 in a row? Wtf.
