You have a century of tradition going kaput as all these teams are now leaving for other power conferences, including the Atlantic Costal Conference. Is the whole point of this merely for more green?

Sometimes I feel like this is all a conspiracy to make NIL look bad. Ruin the product with superconferences and then go "But we had to! We've been losing so much money because of players getting paid!"

They really should have pushed harder to get Texas in there a decade ago. I think the whole Longhorn Network thing was the shortcoming of a deal getting done.

It's all about money. The PAC 12 did a shit job of negotiating TV contracts and those schools are seeing what the Big 10 and ACC are making and dipped

Yearly payouts (per school):

• Big Ten: $58.8 million.
• SEC: $49.9 million.
• Big 12: $42-$44.9 million.
• ACC: $37.9-$41.3 million.
• Pac-12: $37 million

The schools don't pay the players under NIL!

A decade or so ago, the Pac 12 couldve taken the lions share of the Big Twelve for their own, but the likes of Stanford and Cal balked at being in the same conference as the likes of Texas Tech.

Over the last decade as collegiate revenues grew vastly, especially for the Big Ten and SEC, PAC 12 tv revenue stagnated, angering their mega earners, UCLA and USC.

The Big Ten swooped in last year and announced they were poaching both LA schools, which alone accounted for something like 40% of the conferences revenues.

Over the last year, the PAC 12 seemingly pursued a deal with Apple fucking TV of all things to be their broadcast partner, which apparently spooked enough schools to not want to be paygated behind such a non-entity in the sports world.

The dam broke when Colorado announced they were going back to the Big Twelve, and coupled with news that Apple TV was lowballing the conference, a load of schools all bolted as well, namely Utah, Arizona, and Arizona State to the Big Twelve and Oregon and Washington to the Big Ten.

This left four schools remaining, Oregon State, Washington State, Cal, and Stanford. The latter two continued to act like hot shit only to discover that neither the Big Ten nor Big Twelve were interested, causing them to panic and try desperately to join the ACC, the last remaining major conference worth mentioning, which only apparently came to pass after both schools had to each shit and accept deals that they considered far below their lofty statures as heavyweights in non-money sports as recently as last month.

Oregon State and Washington State are basically fucked and will likely have to eventually join the mid-major Mountain West.

tl;dnr - horrible conference management and elitism by Stanford and Cal alienated everybody, drove away the actual money programs, and killed the conference brand.
