I woke up on Thursday, August 24th, with a toothache and stupidly didn't call the dentist until the following Monday. I had concerns about my dental insurance and HSA card until I said fuck it and decided to go regardless. I was put on Amoxicillin. I was still in pain. I was put on Metronidazole. I'm still in pain.

I thought about making this topic two days ago, but figured there was a good chance that I could wake up the next morning without any pain. I didn't want to retroactively come across as worrying over nothing. The pain seems to have gotten a little less, but it's still intense enough to wake me from my sleep.

If I'm still hurting on Tuesday, I'll see about going back to the dentist to get another x-ray if I can. Do I have an infection that is simply that resistant to antibiotics or is the infection gone and the pain related to something else? It kinda feels like a no-win situation. The dentist was wanting to put a crown on my tooth -- this all started after a filling came loose and left a giant hole in my tooth -- but I'm in favor of extraction if the pain doesn't go away soon. I know the pain will be more intense for the next few days after that, but at least then there will be a stopping point to the pain. (Unless it's stemming from something else altogether.)

Anybody would go through a day or two of pain or sickness to get better. But this has been over a week. Even when the pain is held at bay by a maximum dose of ibuprofen, there's still a feeling of pressure and general irritation. It's like if somebody's pressing on your cheek. Even if it doesn't hurt, you still feel that it's there. And I'm still as irritable and quick tempered as if I felt every bit of pain.

I've never had pain go on for this long in spite of efforts to curb it.

I had to get a root canal several years ago because of a toothache. Tooth pain is no joke and enduring the pain for several days can feel like weeks.

Make sure you get a crown or veneer after the root canal.

For real. The worst pain I've ever endured was from a toothache.

Ceaseless aching of teeth tends to not be conducive to sleep, too.

I have a root canal and crowning scheduled for the 25th of this month. The dentist wanted to make sure that I was without infection by that point. He said the pain should go down within a day or two and was seemingly surprised when I called on Thursday to say that it hadn't.

I think it has receded a little, but it's gone from maybe a 9/10 to an 8.6/10 to an 8.4/10, etc. But that's kinda splitting hairs when you consider that it's still intense enough to wake me from my sleep. I should realistically go to bed right now. Maybe I'll get a full night's sleep or close to a full night's sleep before the ibuprofen wears off again.

Of course, I'm trying to keep these doses of antibiotics as close to every 8 hours as possible.

You have to wait that long for the root canal? You might want to see if there's a different dentist in your coverage who could do it sooner. I can't remember how long I had to wait, but it certainly wasn't almost 2 months.

Sorry, I meant this month.

I accidentally typed "next month" because we were going from August to September. Anyway, he said the pain should go away after taking antibiotics. If the infection is gone and the pain is independent of that, I'm going to need to get this tooth extracted or crowned well before September 25th.

Keep in mind that I had a filling come out. That "tooth" is mostly a gaping hole as it is. When I eat, I either have to use a tooth pick or swish water around to flush out scraps of food that get stuck in it. (Gross, I know. I'm sorry.) I'm almost in favor of extraction.

Isn't Amoxicillin a 5 day course? Is it possible y'all jumped the gun on switching antibiotics?

But yes, can absolutely confirm teeth related pain is some of the worst bullshit ever. The way it radiates is just

Do you have a water pick or anything similar? Could have some food in there irritating the nerve. When I had a tooth pulled, the dentist gave me a syringe type thing to flush out the hole which was much gentler since I controlled the force of the stream.

I found Oragel to help getting to sleep. Didn't numb it for a long time, but long enough to get asleep. I also found that laying flat made it much harder to rest as opposed to reclining at an angle. Not the most comfortable, but it was actual sleep.

Nah, not gross, I went through that, too. I hope the pain doesn't get any worse for you. I took ibuprofen every 6 hours when I had the pain. Somehow managed to sleep through some nights without waking from pain.

Root Canal and it's that bad? You better have them just put you out or get black out drunk for this.

I snapped my pelvis in half once and it paled in comparison to a relatively short procedure like a root canal. That shit is a no go for me awake. The shit they use didn't numb anything I had to be knocked out.

They literally drill right down to the root of your tooth where it's already hurting and infected. All kindsa cold air goin into that with the drill.... Ohhhhhh It's usually two visits with the crown but day 1 is gonna test you big time if you don't get numb.

But uh..... Best of luck!

I don't know where your bum tooth is but I had three teeth on my jawbone give me hell this year and going to sleep was impossible with such intense pain. One thing that helped me a couple of times was drifting to sleep in a sitting position. The way may stuff was inflamed, I couldn't lie down in ANY position (side, back, or stomach) without it being aggravated, which equaled no sleep. The chair wasn't ideal but it got me more sleep than the bed. Just throwing it out there.

Also, I second the notion of seeing if you can get it taken care of earlier elsewhere. There's absolutely no reason that you should wait damn near a month to get that taken care of. Having to wait a week or two for the infection to subside is one thing but a whole goddamn month? I certainly understand being booked but surely they're not the only endodontist office in your area. Shit, I'd legit drive an hour or two if it meant I could get that done by mid-week. That pain is brutal, at least mine was.

You have my greatest sympathies TC. Tooth pain is some of the worst imaginable and I'm hoping you get it fixed soon. I was lucky enough to have insurance cover my wisdom teeth removal before they became a huge issue.
