It was around the difference between a technician and engineer, and up until recently I had forgotten it, but thinking about it now that I've been a SW Architect for a while I really appreciate the lesson he was trying to convey. It went something like this.

  • If you can use a tool you're a technician
  • If you can create a tool you're an Engineer
A lot of people can do the first point. Anyone can learn how to use something with varying levels of success (and a lot of blind faith could be involved), but not a lot of people can create something that can be effectively used by others. Creating a product takes a lot of time, effort, knowledge of the problem domain and critical thinking skills. I think a lot of non-Engineering mindspace people just don't see this, or simply don't care.

I don't know why I'm posting this here and not on one of the other sites I visit the at may better appreciate the post. I expect the comments to be lukewarm at best.
