Because people can put anything in a file you download
Choose the wrong file and now your computer has a virus.

I would say that it was true in the past.

These days i would say it comes from misclicks or malicious ads that redirect people to scam sites.

On top of a virus, they try to phish people a bit.

I feel like old school viruses that do crazy shit to the PC have fallen by the wayside in favor of ransomware or spyware that tries to stay hidden.

oh, phish people? but you have to like manually enter your private data right? can they get it if it's just stored on your computer?

Those redirect ads lead to real looking login pages and try to steal your login info for something like facebook or steam.

That or its an ad for some kind of product and the page is a total scam that gets all your personal info and CC number.

Like on google, sometimes the top link is a recommended ad page that goes to some of these sketchy sites.

Theres some old YT videos of guys fucking with these sites by making a script that bombards them with mountains of junk info.

Nah, not porn. "Helpful" software is probably what gets old people the most, ransomware and shit. Younger folks it is probably from games, even the more tech savvy have fallen to downloading a pirated game only to find that game had a lil more than they bargained for.

No.

There is just too much "clean" porn on the internet everyone knows about.

It's when you have to search for the strange stuff or pirating stuff when you suddenly get thrown around between sketchy sites with sketchy links and sketchy download buttons, leading to sketchy downloads.

A lot of malware comes from ads. One of several reasons why youre not just morally but also pragmatically justified in using adblock.

Advertising shits in your head *and* your PC.

it's part of the reason why windows 10/11 is so awful out of the box

no,especially since these days you don't really have to download porn and i would say that most virus comes from people downloading software especially from what they think it's the official page and from emails

Nowadays malware that steals your information is kinda of obsolete anyway. Companies just sell your information which they gather by requiring you to have a stupid account for everything.

no. literally my job, so I can tell you on a personal computer level it's coming from clicking popup ads on sites like wordpress blogs/storefronts or - funnily enough - fandom wikis, etc., or from downloading cracked software. and on a corporate level it's going to links in attacker-sent emails (though they're often sending them from legitimate email accounts on machines they've already got into), or also downloading cracked software.

Microsoft's pretty much culled the bad Office document, so there tends not to be attachments in your bad emails anymore, it's usually a link pointing to a .zip file, with usually a javascript file inside the zip.

definitely not obsolete, but inefficient from a ROI standpoint. Why craft a malware to steal information from personal computers when you can craft one to steal credentials/email data/chrome login stuff from CORPORATE computers and then sell that access on to the nastier criminals? "Initial Access Brokers" are a huge part of the ransomware chain, there's good money in it. and they don't need to muddy their hands with actually negotiating with victims.

Personal computer infostealers still exist, but the main one I can think of off the top of my head mainly focuses on stealing cryptocurrency wallet details.

Gullible people downloading software to "increase performance" is probably a big one as well.
