It was very odd to have such a cool fucking story from a fighting game back in 1993... which is great because it just was not the equal to Street Fighter 2. It was unique and fun, a decent fighting game, but it just couldn't really hang with the BIG boys. Honestly mechanically I'd put it just below Mortal Kombat though. It was also developed FOR home console, so it wasn't like you were playing a "lesser version" of the game compared to in arcades.

Loved this one. My buddy had it, and I'd go round his on the weekends to play it.

Hell yes, quite a bit. I'd forgotten about that.

I've played it. I didn't spend too much time with it.

The characters are well designed and their backgrounds are fleshed out. The visuals and sound effects are nice. It has some neat kills. And there's even that fun intro where a random character destroys the Sega logo. The controls are a bit overcomplicated for a fighting game. This game was designed with the assumption that, if you were looking for another fighting game, you had already mastered Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter II. As such, it's difficult to a point that it can be exclusionary for certain players. (Myself included if I'm being honest.)

The game's biggest failing, however, is on the most fundamental level of all: there are no villains. M. Bison is an asshole and it feels cathartic to kick him through a statue. It's rewarding to hear Shao Kahn cry out "No! No!" in disbelief that he could be defeated. In this game, you're a good person killed before their time battling other good people who were killed before their time. The winner gets to come back to life. No. I want to beat some unlikable asshole. Or, if I'm playing as the bad guy, I want to revel in being EEEEEEEEVIL. Even the gangster and the assassin have redemption-focused backstories which make them sympathetic. You have all of these colorful characters right out of a comic book or pro wrestling and there are no dividing lines.

That, above all else, is the reason we're not playing Eternal Champions 7 today.

Yeah, I rented it a few times and my parents wound up buying it for me eventually.

This was a rental my buddy and I cycled through a few times. I remember always choosing the wizard guy because the manual described his style as "hapkido cane fighting" and I never knew what that was.

Used to kick all my friends asses at it too. I miss the days of couch multiplayer, I was under the impression I was great at video games then when really it was just that I was better than everyone I knew. Online I'm nothing special at all.

Favorite characters were Larcen and Jetta. Larcen is so damn cool am I right?

If you didn't play the sega cd version then you are missing out.

Great game. I hate how obtuse the game is with pulling off finishers.

Thanks to Sega of Japan we never got the final game in the trilogy.
