Teenage Tiefling War Cleric who flavors all his spells to be purposefully teenage egdy and tryhardy (Like Shield of Faith looking like barbwire) and then the character himself being more of an awkward teen... It was a "seemed like a good idea at the time" thing. It's essentially identical to 3E's to-hit roll, just the math is backwards. D&D's biggest problem, since forever, and still going, is that it can't shake off Gygax's idealism. THAC0 working like that, 1E psionics, and 2E's "rough draft" of a skill system having random modifiers, are probably due to that same idealism. 3E tried to chuck the idealism, but 4E seems to have doubled down in everything but the gameplay mechanics, then 5E was mostly just 3E again. It's endemic to the player base too. Some looked fairly normal, some had goat legs, some had tails or horns, and some had other weird supernatural effects like making plants wilt by touch.
