I like a lot of stuff they've made, but it seems like they really fucked up with the last Saint Row game. I wasn't crazy about 4 but overall really dug the franchise, and the latest one just seemed so lazy and uninspired. Guess that was the common consensus. Wish the best to the folks who work there regardless though.

They were probably thinking, "we really wrote ourselves into an impossible to get out of corner with Saints Row 4 and Gat out of Hell, but we think we can milk this franchise a little bit more, so let's try the reboot route!"
Honestly, they didn't even write themselves into any corner at all. The game's true ending gave the Saints access to an alien time machine. That's a blank check to bring the series back to its roots and do whatever the fuck you want.

It's probably because they bought so many other things in the meantime HOPING it would sell gangbusters, because Capitalists. And then they were like "Oops gotta trim the fat... like this ENTIRE STUDIO FUCK YOU GUYS ME WANT MONEY" and that's what happened.

I think the issue was that Saints Row was traditionally a mafia-esque game with random shit thrown in.

From what I heard, they went in a more inner-city struggle sort of deal than the goof-fest that was the previous games.

Wait, what? Saints Row was never mafia-esque. The early games were straight up inner-city gang struggles. 1 and 2 were like that, and they were the ones most people liked most. It didn't start getting goofy until 3.

That said, with Durian bringing up Mafia, (or "mafia," but it made me think of the actual game series Mafia), it reminds me that, honestly, there was room for all three. GTA, Saints Row, and Mafia, because they all had different subject matter, even if the gameplay was pretty much the same. It's sad Embracer expected too much out of SR, honestly. I hope it gets sold to somebody good.

It isn't. If anything, the series was always EXTREMELY "woke," since... in 1 and 2, you are literally an inner-city gang fighting against other gangs abusing capitalistic opportunities, as well as police injustice, and then even in 3, when it starts to get goofy, you're STILL ultimately fighting against capitalism, itself.

Anybody saying "Go woke, go broke" about the newest game have literally never played a Saints Row game in their life.

Eh, I wouldn't exactly call it a noticeable tone shift. There was a gradual ease into it as the first two were still fairly goofy overall. They just managed to pull it off while remaining relatively grounded.
But yeah, by SR3 they definitely turned the zaniness up a notch, and by 4, they just said "Fuck it."

I don't disagree, to an extent. Saints Row was always a bit more goofy than like, GTA. But the tone shift from 2 to 3 is pretty noticeable, since 3 is when it starts to get REALLY goofy, such as having missions where you're helping Pierce fight a giant product placement soda can, and so on. 1 and 2, while more goofy than Mafia or GTA, still kept things mostly grounded. 3 started to go "...Eh, maybe we leave the ground a little bit." And then 4 just went "What the fuck is 'ground?'"

Saints Row reboot sucked ass, they could have just made a true sequel to Gat out of Hell where after Johnny and Kinzie rescue the boss, Johnny and the Boss decided to find the Saints a new homeworld and rebuild humanity.
But no, they just had to make Agents of Mayhem which wasn't too bad but wasn't good then reboot the series.

1 was pretty much a GTA clone, 2 started to shy away from it, 3 was doing its own thing which I loved and 4 just went nuts which I also loved because it didn't take itself seriously at anytime.

I loved all the pop culture references thrown into 3 and 4.

The reboot should have just been a sequel to Gat out of Hell, I think it would have been more well received that way.

For my friend and I, it was just really fucking glitchy. Both harmless "hahaha that is pretty goofy" glitches (it the game was just these kind of glitches then we could have easily powered through to complete the game) and "yeah, this shit just broke my game" type glitches. *This game has a prank option where if you play co-op you can turn the other player into various options. We was messing around and my friend turned me into at toilet.....my character could not turn back. It would have been a permanent glitch had I not had a back-up save of my character off of the boss factory AND me turning off cloud auto-saves thus I had a back-up of my character from like, 3 hours ago or so*

My friend had his mission progress glitched (one of the many known glitches around release) and could no longer do story missions.....it didn't matter if he was by himself playing single player or joining other people's games, it just straight up glitched and could no longer progress. We were already some hours into the game so when this happened he just put the game down and never played again.

One was fine. It was kinda just bargain bin GTA but with quite a bit of jank. Especially given that at the time GTA was still kinda wacky.

SR2 is when it really found its voice. It was wacky, but not to the point that it undercut the dramatic bits. The world was big and interactive. The characters developed a bit better. The story improved. At the same time GTA started to become serious business so, Saints Row comfortably held the title of tongue-in-cheek open world crime simulator pretty firmly.

Then 3 came up and it increased the wackiness by several orders, this time at the detriment of the story and the characters. It also reduced the interactivity of the world and the character creation.

4 went complete wacky. But this time to its benefit as it kinda gave up on even being a crime sim. It was just a what the fuck simulator and it honestly worked better than 3.

This is mainly where the series got super controversial. I liked 3 more than 4, for example, because it was closer to 2 than not, whereas 4 just... Didn't even try to be close to the first two games. At the same time, I can respect people liking 4 more, because it clearly knew its identity, even if that identity was... Craziness.
