The show is incredibly witty and lampshades so many television, movie, and musical tropes by poking fun at them with eccentric musical numbers. The show also plays on character and gender stereotypes by flipping them over their heads. But most interestingly, the show can get surprisingly serious by showing the very harmful effects of mental health issues when left untreated. I was surprised how the zany situations at the beginning of the show suddenly became more serious when you realize the main character is in serious need of mental help but chooses to instead deny it and live in the fantastical world she created. I really recommend people give the show a try. The writing kinda gives me a Community vibe, with some 30 Rock and Cougartown in there. --- Congratulations! It's like izombie, the title does not do the show any favors whatsoever and it's a damn shame. Before when people would talk about crazy ex gf I kept imagining this crappy uma thurman movie so ignored it for years, until one day I saw it on netflix and decided to play it in the background on a whim. I had no idea I was in for a clever, witty show that could get surprisingly "real" about mental health issues, completely acknowledging some of the antics the character does as borderline, stuff that's usually passed on because "haha romantic comedy" type tropes. And I really enjoyed the songs, as someone who's not really into music. Especially those rare times when I recognized what they were parodying, like the lala land drugs song. SuperSaiyanTien 09/06/23 11:19:30 PM #21:	I forgot how I got into it initially, but I remember really falling in love with it during some specific numbers - namely the song "You Stupid Bitch" (yes, an actual title) because it adequately went over the thoughts you have when you're beating yourself up for something and I related so hard. My personal qualm with the show happens post S3 because I didn't like how they did such a drastic shift in tone. It went from a comedy-drama to more pure drama and it just wasn't my thing. I also didn't like certain decisions they made later on like replacing Santino, rumored because he was so popular, etc. Still, I'd recommend it 100% as there are some really REALLY catchy songs.
