I'd avoid Samsung for most of the same reasons I'd avoid Apple. The use of Android rather than a proprietary OS makes them a bit better, but they're still overpriced for what you get. Go with a brand like Oppo and you'll get way better value for money.

Unless you're really keen on the S pen functionality. I don't think anyone besides Samsung makes phones with that kind of feature. Tablets yes, but not phones.

Do you want to theoretically emulate any game from NES to PS2 on your phone?

Android's come a significantly long way since its early days and for 99% of people even the lowest end devices work just fine. If you're switching from iOS after a long ass time there are a few things to be aware of:
  • Android phones aren't compatible with iMessage so most of the time you're limited to basic SMS + MMS. If you and your contacts don't use iMessage gimmicks, this shouldn't be an issue.
  • Pictures and videos sent by Android devices tend to have compression and won't look as good as if they were sent from iOS/iMessage. Some of this extends into pics/videos in general due to most Android devices utilizing different software for camera optimization.
  • Android manufacturers support most devices for a much shorter period than Apple does with iPhones. Most Android devices get official software (OS) support for 2-4 years where iPhones get around 5-8 years.
  • Most app developers prioritize iOS over Android and most of the time will implement feature updates before Android ports.

If you use your phone for basic communication/browsing/email/social media you should be fine. Even if your phone stops getting OS support you can theoretically flash it with a custom ROM (basically installing a fork of Android) to keep it going longer.

None of this is a problem when Android phones message each other. It is only an issue when contacting iPhones because Apple refuses to let Android use iMessage or adapt Apple messaging to an open source standard.
