They don't even have their wallets out. They don't have their bill ready. They don't even know how much they owe. They can't figure out how to use the card machine even when they come EVERY DAY to the store. They ignore every question and fail to listen to basic instructions. They never catch any anomalies or mistakes I always have to fix every fucking little thing and baby them through everything. They have zero spatial awareness. They talk on the phone, turn away to talk to the rest of their party. Shut the fuck up and finish paying the bill there is a line.

Me "How was your food today?"

Them: "Yes"

So unintelligent and apathetic you can barely call them human.

Americans are so fucking lazy and entitled with the service industry that they abandon their dignity while trampling on everyone elses. Putting the slighest bit of effort in is above them I guess. But then they throw a fit when their imattentiveness causes an issue

Yeah. I still recall my first job working at the Costco foodcourt before registers were automated. I think everybody should have a service job at least once in their life to experience how apathetic and rude so many people are. Maybe it would improve things. I would like to think I wouldn't be an entitled douche without the experience but it definitely reinforced the way I treat service workers.

People who do that in the Amazon returns line at Kohl's are the scum of the earth. They literally give you a download code you can have ready in your browser. I got stuck waiting yesterday because of an older woman who hadn't downloaded the codes and couldn't get a signal in the back of the store. She stepped out of line to get them but then thought that somehow gave her permission to butt back in at the front every time she was finally able to get a signal for the multiple orders she was returning. Meanwhile the line was getting longer and longer. I went early in the afternoon because I figured it wouldn't be that crowded but nope.

Why would I have my wallet and my money out before I get to the register? I'm not pulling that stuff out while I'm waiting in line lol. Also, how am I supposed to know what I owe before I get rung up? I'm only keeping a rough estimate of what the final total is in my head, I'm not adding up everything precisely and I'm not calculating taxes. That's your job, you're literally the person with the scanner and the register. What anomalies or mistakes am I supposed to be catching? If there's a sku error then that's your job to catch it too, not mine since I'm just the customer.

I love when people act like an angry rant on a message board means you are a perpetually angry psychopath mass shooter or something.

No I'm just an underpaid worker at an understaffed store expected to smile and thank people for treating me like dirt. Expected to put in maximum effort for people who put in zero effort.

I'm literally queitly typing this while eating lunch before walking home. I'm releasing stress peacefullly instead of bottling up or blowing up on someone like the actual psychos who keep attacking service workers.

A store in my area was shot up because the drive through was closed. For the service industry purchasing power is down, safety is lower, but stress is up.

I don't know about other places but ive been at Costco for a long time and their stupidity and rudeness aside - they're also complete fucking pigs.

You know those little paper cups that the demo workers put food into for the customers to try? I find them EVERY, FUCKING, WHERE except in the fucking TRASH CANS which are at the end of EVERY, FUCKING AISLE.

I find them crumpled up, sometimes with food still in them tossed on the floor, tossed onto the product pallets, tossed into the storage steel, tossed into potato/onion/watermelon bins, tossed into carts, tossed into the clothing department, tossed into the freezer doors, etc etc etc. Like what the fuck is wrong with people? Do these brain dead slobs live like this at home? Funny thing is, i bet the majority of them don't, but they just give no fucks away from home.

You know what the greatest thing about Covid was at Costco? Those demo tables were gone. It was clean as hell in there.

I don't work in the maintenance (otherwise known as the janitorial dept) but a lady there told me a story about some husband and wife eating a sample from one of those cups. He tosses it on the floor behind him. The wife scolds him and he says, what? It's her job (the maintenance lady) to pick it up.

The entitlement of some of these mutants that walk in there.

This is a restraunt not walmart. Regardless service is a two way street. A smooth transaction requires all parties to be attentive. Thats my whole point. People don't attempt to put in simple brief effort even remotely in line with the level of service they expect even when it will end up costing more time overall.

The servers give you the bill and you pay upfront. People mix up their bills among their own party or cosy up too close to the next person dumping their shit on the counter and get their bills mixed up with the next person. Or they constantly change their minds on how they want the bills split up and cause issues with their wishy washiness and not paying attention to the questions I ask. Or the people picking up online orders literally don't know what is in the order or even know what name its under.

Or the server gives the wrong bill and people(often knowingly) ignore the obvious red flags and pay far less then could possibly be correct.

And many errors ultimately happen because guests uncooperative, rude behavior slowing and stressing workers out.

Because they mess up because they aren't even looking the screen while talking on the phone. Because they won't let me touch their card when they mess up repeatedly despite instructions. Those kinda things.

Also really not hard to read the bill and set the money aside while at the table so you can pop your wallet open and hand me the prepared wad cash instead of dropping a 20 pound purse, whipping a bag out of the purse which contains your wallet and then glacially slow counting out in all singles for your 50 dollar check.

My whole point is people don't think about the worker or other patrons. They don't get that being needlessly slow or obstinate for no reason inconveniences not just me but everyone else waiting on my service.

They made it worse since I left. Now you can't even scan in multiples at one time. Meaning if you have a 24 pack of coke, you have to scan each can in individually....24 times.

Another fine example of customer behavior comes from a former coworker of mine. It was a couple days before Thanksgiving up here in Canada, so early October. Customer has her turkey, coworker reaches down below the cash to grab another stack of bags (as this was 2012ish) and she drops a 15 lb frozen turkey on his head. He ends up going to the hospital. Don't know what happened to her though.

Yes. Constantly. Like an aisle or two away from the freezer or cooler. Because its oh so hard, despite the fact they're walking all over the building, to walk one or two aisles back and put it back where it belongs. Because if its out too long, obviously we can't sell it, money is lost, and it goes straight into the trash compacter. We can't donate it because its a health risk if its meat or dairy.

Whats really annoying is when the person in front of me finishes paying and gets their receipt, but instead of moving they stand there digging through their shit and Im like. Can I move up to the payment thing??

I was putting my stuff on the belt today and some lady was frantically trying to load her shit at the same time (I started loading from closest to the cashier because I didnt realize someone was going to literally run up behind me). Seriously, wait your fucking turn and be aware that youre not the only fucking person in the store and other peoples time does matter. Its almost always senior citizens who do this stuff. Also it drives me nuts when someone walks into the entrance and then stops, effectively blocking the entrance for anyone behind them (which is usually a lot of people in an over populated town).

The entire experience of going to the store has become a nightmare where I live. Everyone is so self centered that they cannot operate without blocking the flow of traffic for everyone else. They breathe down your neck when its your turn to look and then they stand there like zombies blocking what you want. Not to mention that theyre perpetually stocking the shelves in the middle of the day because theyre too cheap to pay a night crew.

Oh god this.

I've started getting kinda harsh with customers on this stuff.

Its ridiculous how often a large party pays and just stands around in the lobby blocking access to the entire dining room.

I've largely given up on being polite about it because they just ignore you. I rip through and over their worthless conversation and tell them to clear the way. I've defintely been vastly more assertive with customers since covid.

I agree with the notion that you stop seeing certain customers as people after a certain point. Theyre almost like robots or something. The stuff that they thoughtlessly scarf down is mind boggling, especially when you see them in there every day. My more recent customer service experiences showed me that they somehow managed to get stupider and flat out wrathful when their unbelievable demands cannot be fulfilled. Customer behavior was what drove me out faster than the low wage and turbulent hours. Ive seen a guy get so angry about a nine cent price increase that he was probably on the verge of a heart attack.

Customers were normally pretty chill. My issue was always management. For every dumb customer there were 20 dumb management interactions. Wrote up for bringing in a coffee, yelled at for doing my job, yelled at because someone else decided to not show up. Lot of yelling in that job. Told I wasn't allowed to have a cooler when it was 35c out (we normally have 15-18c weather so the temperature was killing us).

I don't want conversation. I want them to listen to basic instructions and be prepared at at least the most fundemental levels so they can take 20 seconds to pay instead of 2 minutes and so they don't obliviously pay for and leave with the wrong takeout order.

I literally just want both our days to be a little easier.

"What is the name on the order"

*Blank stare*

"What is the name on your order?"

"Dunno my wife placed it"

"What is HER name?"

"Karen Bitchface"

"I have that order. Did you need any particular condiments?"

"I don't even know what she ordered. Whatever is in there is fine."

*Man puts his card in the machine backwards and upside down. Then it turns out he NEVER ACTIVATED THE CARD. Then he tries another one and it declines for the wrong pin*

*Finally gets it done and he leaves. Comes back shortly asking where his drinks are.*

"Your wife didn't order any drinks and their are none on the reciept sir. Do you want to purchase some?"

*Scowls and leaves*

All the time shit like this. Even from the kiddos and middle aged people.

You do know many places require certain things to be asked right? And that customers get pissy over NOT being asked even if they have no complaints?

And that many situations require certain questions to hopefully avoid problems or to sort out a problem?

You can have the check mostly filled out, you strange, strange person who still pays for groceries by check.

But the UPC for a 24 pack of Coke is on the outside. The individual UPCs wouldn't scan because they're not supposed to be sold individually.

Yes.

Or throwing yogurt into the frozen coolers.

Not to mention that theyre perpetually stocking the shelves in the middle of the day because theyre too cheap to pay a night crew.

That happens at stores even with night crews.

Managers like that are morons.

Bullshit.

How would you do that before you know the total?
