To be fair it is uneven as hell. All the stuff with Luke, Kylo Ren, Rey, was all amazing.

All the stuff with the Resistance was uneven. A lot of it relies on people just making dumb decisions.

I could have done better by just not doing anything.

But if I was forced to do something star wars 7, 8, and 9 would just be Thrawn Trilogy. And I wouldn't ask any of the original actors to come back.

It's easily the best out of the sequel trilogy and better than any of the prequels.

Switching directors halfway through a trilogy was what really ruined the sequel saga. Especially two directors who had vastly different ideas for what they wanted. Episode 8 was retconning a lot of Episode 7, while 9 retconned 8 to an extreme degree it has now become an unwatchable mess.

I like the theme of, "fuck the past, focus on the future." I like making Rey some nobody. Kylo Ren is at his best in TLJ; offing Snoke, a wannabe Palpatine loser who had no presence was great, fuck the haters. The way they handled Leia was super awkward and the space battle had some really mixed messaging.

You know what, I mostly agree with that. If you took out the easily then I would completely agree. Its still not very good though.

It would have been fine if it wasnt done contrary to the previous directors intentions. Doing it that way from the start would have worked much better.

As said above, the trilogy became an incoherent mess due to the change in directors. The same director for all three (regardless of which one) would have at least given us a cohesive story.

Rise of Skywalker was a mess because it was bad. The map dagger is idiotic, "Somehow, Palpatine returned" is painful, Luke's story is terribly executed. Those aren't the fault of TLJ. If Abrams really wanted Snoke, he could have resurrected Snoke instead of Palpatine.

None of the TLJ plot points I mentioned previously were harmful, even if they were spiteful. It was Abrams' insistence to make Rey special, to replay the OT AGAIN. No amount of closed plotlines forces you to write Rise of Skywalker. Repeating the same empty talking points doesn't fix bad writing.

What I watched of it I found boring, and not just because they killed that girl's hot sister early on.

There have been innumerable posts detailing specifically the problems with the movie, one could not give you a rough bullet point with explanations - I've tried and it ended up being like 3 pages.

TLJ wastes massive potential, doesn't follow the rules of the established universe it is movie 8 in, has laughably bad antagonists, has nothing meaningful to say, has horrible world building to the point where the audience isn't really made aware of the state of the galaxy beyond "FIrst Order is now in control just because despite the loss of the their weapon that destroyed the New Republic capital in the first movie", the fights scenes are LAUGHABLY bad to the point where weapons appear and disappear and characters can be visibly seen missing on purpose or waiting for their queues (Kylo Ren chokes HIMSELF at one point in his fight against the guards because the guard he is fighting completely lets go of the weapon he is supposedly choking him with)...holy shit I'm not even close to done...

Thanks, edited now. Those creatures have largely retreated to the shadows as reality has slowly beat away at them. They are waiting for that mythical day when the ST is suddenly loved by everyone.

I dont have a specific breakdown video on hand but watch Rey and Kylo vs Snokes guards. Specifically pay attention to the soldiers out of shot (and thus focus).

And eh, Ive seen some ST fanboys. Usually the ones who insist Rey isnt a Mary Sue and those who criticise the movies are just sexist/racist.

TL;DR
TLJ is a decent movie if it's not a Star Wars main movie. It's suBVeRtiNg eXpeCtatIoN ruins the flow of the series.

Imagine a MLP movie where it's dark and gritty and the ponies got slaughtered, and it's canon. Even if it was cinematically better, it will be seen as a travesty by the fans.

I went in having liked The Force Awakens, I didn't and do not give a shit about Rey "Mary Sue" crap, I didn't even think she was much of one... so it's none of that dumb anti-woke crap. It's just a dumb movie with tons of problems.

The pacing is terrible. The heroic rebels are stupid - and the first order even dumber. Rose's arc is pointless. The plot cul-de-sac where they leave the ship in slow speed pursuit somehow to visit the gambling planet is all over the place in tone. The way they handled Luke Skywalker was tragic, and his redemption feels tacked on and pointless. The movie should have ended with the killing of Snokes. The third act salt planet battle was a battle to see which faction acted slightly less stupid.

of all the movies you cant understand why people dont like, its very strange that you would pick the one that people seem to be completely incapable of not explaining their dislike for at any given opportunity

I would argue that criticising bad character writing isnt about being anti-woke. If the only thing you changed about her was making her male instead, all the reasons shes called a Mary Sue would still be present.

(just a few - everyone likes her immediately, she knows enough about the Falcon to impress Han Solo, she somehow can speak Wookie, she can use Force techniques and a lightsaber without training, she keeps up with and beats Kylo, injury be damned)

None of that bothers me that much either, but I can still see it. As a once upon a time writer myself I cant help but see it. And none of it has anything to do with her being female.

Yeah, that fight sequence was terribad, and snoke as a character was a waste of everyone's time. That whole casino planet and Benicio Del Toro betraying them side story, also a big fat waste of time.

They made two good Star Wars movies and everything since has been garbage. It's a modern fairy tale retread of all the classic Greek mythology tropes. There's just nothing there under the surface to explore; the fact that they got 2 full movies out of it at all is, frankly, astonishing.

ROTJ wasnt as good as ANH or TESB but it still deserves to be included among the good ones. >_>

Also Rogue One was better than it had any right to be.

The problem with ST was it really didn't have a great villain.

Anyways, I still feel like TLJ would have been regarded higher if the follow up didn't completely reverse / ignore a lots of plot lines generated by TLJ.

I liked it when it came out, but was upset at getting rid of the big bad guy and leaving no set up at all for part 9. And the casino part felt off.

I just found The Last Jedi super boring. I watch Star Was movies for spaceship battles and laser shootouts, and most the movie was missing that.

I just remember my main thought during the movie was "is it over yet"

The movie stops dead during the ridiculous starship firing range chase.

It was better than it had any right to be. Meaning it should've been shit like the rest of the recent crop of star wars films.

The sequel trilogy was so bad that new Star Wars media won't even touch it.

Best to just go past it, veil it away, or focus on the early new republic or high republic.

TLJ is my favorite of the sequels actually. I feel like most of the issues come from Luke fanboys who can't stand either him being a dick or him dying? I remember the set pieces being cool. I like the salt planet.
