I still have my Nikon it's awesome. I prefer it over my smart phone because at least I feel more like a photographer though tbf I haven't taken pictures with that camera in years except for a recent one I took my tv because it was some blocked scene from a game :P My really old digital camera it was an Olympus I gave it to a friend and sold it for like twenty bucks or free. About the same outcome. I haven't seen him in a few years now but I thought it was strange because the memory card was extremely small it held 25 pictures and I told this guy yo I know it's a proprietary memory stick but that shit has to be cheap as hell on eBay now and he was all like I want to make this 25 pictures count I am good. Seemed like such an unnecessary hassle.

I never drove so I never had a GPS, but Tomtom was popular once, what a whacky name XD

Ok I just looked and I didn't take any pictures on my Nikon since 2021. I just charged the battery after a very long time of it being dead.My pictures were for what's it's worth; some pictures of chicken wings I bought and it was the tv hah but it was just Brett Favre on a segment with a watchlong when the Manning Brothers would do 'em during a Packers game.

As for driving. Ok I drove a bit when I got my learner's permit, but once that expired, I haven't driven since. So the last time I drove a car was probably 2002 or so. I live in Western New York. So I do live in that state, I could walk to most places I wanted to go though walking is more annoying now with more traffic on the road and just life in general :P

If you think Nikon went out of business you have never been to any kind of photography store. Cameras will never be replaced by cell phones for anything other than casual photography due to the physical limitations of a cell phone's design.

No, when I say physical limitation, I mean actually physical. A camera lens is a physical object that does things with light that require that physical shape. It has nothing to do with software or computational power. If the light can't reach your camera lens on your phone then the phone can't do anything with it.

This article explains it in more detail:

We overcame the physical limitations of computers as well. The processing power in your hand would have taken a room full of desktops 20 years ago. Yet, weve gotten chips down to 2nm.

You aren't understanding what is meant by physical limitation and are just talking about computational power again. This has absolutely nothing to do with that. A better comparison is a microphone. You are probably fully aware that the mic on your phone sucks compared to a professional mic and also understand why. A pro mic is a lot bigger, it captures more sound, you don't want a giant mic poking out of your phone so good enough. Okay, now think about cameras the same way, because the problem is the same. If you read that article they talk about it. It's a physical size issue. They aren't trying to increase computational power, that's not relevant to the issue I am talking about. It's about capturing a physical stimulus (light).

I think smart phones could be a lot better if they wanted to be, but no one wants something clunky or foldable and with a small keyboard (my favorite mobile phone was the slider that slided into a keyboard for text or slid into a phone numpad for calling).

Also you can look like less of a tourist with a smart phone too. *smirks* I mean you don't have to ask permission to take a picture of anyone or feel bad, just turn your flash off oh I just happened to check my messages and free picture. Not to even say how a lot of ppl don't care about privacy and just would rather record video and shoot audio to use later. Without any concern.

If you dont understand that we have smart phones and wearable devices today because we overcame the physical limitations we previously had for processors, then that is ok.

Smartphone cameras today are better than digital cameras from 5 years ago. And as technology increases, the gap will become ever smaller until standalone digital cameras are gone.

Have a good evening.

That you wrote this shows you really do not understand what I, or any experts on the issue (like in that article I linked), are talking about. You keep talking about processers and it's the most apples and oranges thing possible when we're talking about a lens capturing the physical stimulus of light (which isn't changing size ever).

Youre arguing that we cant progress cameras because of a physical limitation.

And we thought that about any technology weve made better by breaking those limitations.

I test superconductors on wafers that have 10 meter meander on a 20,000 um surface area. It looks like we can overcome physical limitations quite well.
