So an awesome PotD member (or at least former member, I'm not certain how active they still are) offered to send me their old Retroid 2+, but shipping was a pain. They ended up buying me a newer model from the site, and they are awesome.

Now to work out what I'm going to play on this first. I'll definitely have to dig out my PSP and micro console game dumps (not sure where I stuck the external hard drive with them) and see how they feel on this new toy.

But while I figure out where I left it, I still have a bunch of Steam retro game purchases with the original ROM files included, and my Android library for a few more games.

I kept almost getting one of these decent handheld emulators, but it never happened. Now that the Steam deck's out, it'll just end up being that. I love the designs of so many of these, but most of them struggle a bit of PSP/PS2 where the Steam Deck doesn't. Plus you can get one for a decent price in contrast to the newer high end portable PCs, which are goddamn expensive.

I'd have so much fun with that though!

I admit a SteamDeck sounds cool, but for a country Gabe moved to during the time Covid started, we don't get a lot of love. Their store just displays
This item is not available for reservation in your country

I'm never quite sure what each of those systems are capable of, as far as specs and emulation. I guess if I want the best results I'd have to go all the way and just get a Steam Deck, but I'm not ready to spend that much.

Right, finally found my external. Along with games from the NES, Mega Drive and PS1 mini consoles, got these PSP games. Never figured out how to back up DLC for some of these games though, and the current state of PSN for legacy consoles means I'm probably fucked trying now. Pretty sure I can't transfer from PS3 to PSP anymore. Still, doesn't matter for most games.

Gave PPSSPP a go and works well. PSP games seem nice on this device. :)

Taki Udon on youtube does good detailed reviews of their specs and capabilities.

This one struggles a little bit with certain PS2 and PSP games but usually you can fix it up with a little tweaking. The Retroid Pocket 3+ is definitely one of the top portables out there. I'll still eventually go with the Steam Deck because of the promise of longer support.

So tried a few emulators for games I have. The old stuff of course runs great. Next is to try some PS2 stuff, which isn't going to be so good. But a compatibility list has a number of titles that should run 90 - 100% speed just fine. Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly for example, which I'll probably put on just to show to my youngest brother. It is the only Spyro game he hates. >:D
