Hmmm, so Captain Marvel established the Skrulls aren't evil...and yet here they are committing terrorist acts. This really should have been developed better. At this rate I fully understand the people complaining about this franchise having so many moving parts it becomes hard to keep track and easy to lose interest. Like, we haven't seen the Skrulls since Captain Marvel aside from Talos's and Soren's cameos in Far From Home, and we similarly haven't seen Nick Fury since he was impersonated by the former in FFH. Really this whole episode just confused me, and there are only five more. That's really not enough to recover from this blah start, and apparently it only gets worse from here. I didn't even hate Eternals this much! Not to mention the Skrulls being evil all along feels like playing into right-wing fearmongering too.

Oh and why is Emilia Clarke of all people the villain? Like, I guess I've only seen her previously as Sarah Connor in Terminator: Genisys, but apparently her character went crazy in the last season of Game of Thrones and that became one of the most derided aspects of it? Why would Marvel want to repeat that? The ideas in this show are hardly all bad, and it's reasonably well-made for what it is and I like Mendelsohn's and Colman's performances (watching this as a fan of Sam Jackson, he's not really bad here but there's nothing special), but oh my.

I didn't find her convincing either way and I don't like her in anything I've seen. I guess Genisys is hardly her fault (she said she had a miserable time on-set), but still. Interestingly apparently the final casting call for Sarah Connor in that movie came down to Clarke and Brie Larson, and the latter was apparently not convincing holding a gun despite being much taller. I call BS.

Oh and I forgot Captain Marvel was off HELPING THE SKRULLS find a new home after her movie which is why she was absent all this time. This is even more jarring than I thought. Also wasn't a fan of Agent Hill being killed off so casually. Wonder if Cobie Smulders didn't want to be involved or something? The AI opening was also incredibly amateurish even if I kind of get the effect they were going for.

So the show isn't great and has a lot of problems but this isn't really one of them. They're not a monolith, they're individuals.

Book of Boba Fett has two banger episodes and a finale that is okay for what it is. Overall it is absolutely hilarious that Boba Fetts own show gives up on being about him halfway through and is much better for it but I dont hate the show. Like, as a recommendation that show is basically just push through the first half. Secret Invasion is not that.

Re: Emilia Clarke she does keep getting screwed over by writers. GoT, Solo, now this. She keeps getting high profile projects that end up crashing and burning.

I just feel betrayed in a way I haven't by the MCU before. I liked Moon Knight for the most part and really got into Ms. Marvel even if it still had rough spots (the Clandestine are blah). Why is a show with such a large scale only 6 episodes? I lost interest in Andor because it was such a slow burn but Secret Invasion makes me appreciate that. Even this first episode felt so rushed, and it doesn't help I know the series underwent a troubled production that saw virtually the whole thing reshot.

And uh Maya Lopez of all characters is getting her own show next. Which is getting released all at once in November I think? What you doing Marvel? Nothing against Echo as a character though, just why? I'll also admit it doesn't help that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is one of my favorite movies in the whole franchise (really only No Way Home beats it for me, though I still haven't fully seen Winter Soldier), so maybe I went in with overly high expectations.

Emilia Clarke is allowed to play a villain. The issue here is that there ought to be a clause in her contract which prevents her from appearing in a show this dumb.

Allowed is one thing. Whether she's good at it is another.

According to the Rotten Tomatoes critics' consensus, the show apparently tries to overcome a rough start only to completely botch the finale.

I binged it in a day. It was fine. Mostly watched it cause apparently this is kind of a Fantastic Four origin story in a way. Or the beginnings of it.

Apparently the second episode starts with a recap of Captain Marvel. I think the first scene might have just rubbed me the wrong way, even if I understand the intention was to set up the premise of the series regarding how *anyone* could be a Skrull. So presumably the next episode or two will cover in more detail why these particular Skrulls are committing terrorist acts? 6 episodes is definitely way too little time to cover something with such a globe-spanning premise, which at best would make this whole series a proof-of-concept. Tbh I had a similar problem with the first episode of The Mandalorian but not only was that nowhere near as bad, but that show had way more time to make up.

So like, are you actually going to watch it...?

LMS sometimes you just have to accept that something is bad and move on. It isn't healthy to think this hard about a shitty TV show.

That makes no sense in relation to the Mandalorian.

Yeah I was just giving my thoughts on the first episode. I wouldn't be surprised if I returned partly out of bile fascination and partly in the lead-up to The Marvels, which I had been genuinely anticipating (Ms. Marvel was my favorite installment of Phase 4 after Spider-Man). I think the opening scene just rubbed me the wrong way even though in hindsight I understand what they were going for.
