Do people even do tribute summons anymore? I was under the impression that power creep has made many old strategies irrelevant.
Normal Summon is important in modern Yugioh because it's the only limited resource to a player besides cards drawn. Under normal circumstances you can get just 1 NS per turn (including a tribute summon), so you can balance archetypes and staples by giving some cards effects that only proc when normal summoned (or at least can't cheat themselves out and will most likely need to be your combo starter using NS instead of extender)

So I went back and played the old Yugioh games with OG rules and yeah the uneedlessly complicated Yugioh we have now is what this game needed to survive the long haul. OG Yugioh is just fucking boring and would've died out if you couldn't special summon spam all day. I've noticed all I was doing was getting a bunch of normal level 4 1900 beat sticks and waiting to summon either my Summon Skull or Blue Eyes White Dragon while doing other things to cheat them out like abusing the other special summoning mechanics. At least in Modern Yugioh, you can feel somewhat "cool" by stringing combos that take like 5 minutes to bring out your end game boss and your opponent can counteract it with a hand trap.

Modern Yugioh also did other things that make the game last awhile like making your "GY" or Banished zone basically a second deck for instance. I'll probably never get back to playing Modern Yugioh, but I can understand why Konami made the decision they did making the game uber fast paced. It was the only way for the TCG to not die out given how terribly made the card game is made to begin with. It's a testament how well Magic the Gathering is done when almost every TCG made borrows heavily from it than Yugioh. The only thing I see other card games borrow from Yugioh are probably "archetypes" even though Yugioh is not the first to think of that concept.

modern yugioh is very much against the idea of building your own deck

you are expected to just copy paste an accepted deck

and those decks are very similar anymore their is not much variety between archetypes

I never said I found it fun, but I do admit that this was the necessary route Yugioh had to go to survive being a TCG. The original way to play Yugioh was slow and boring. At least in current Yugioh it has something that makes it stand out from the crowd.

Thanks to hand traps, which creates more mind games than before and allows for more interactivity than when Yugioh was just a blaze run.

I've watched all the anime up to VRAINS so I understand the rules just fine. What I don't get is players using sometimes completely unviable archetypes to swarm the field. At that point it's all over because they can Synchro, XYZ, or Link summon whatever bastard they have in their Extra deck and win just like that.

As someone who was never sucked in by this franchise, what was so appealing about it?
