It was right around the time Matrix Reloaded came out and Pirates of the Caribbean also came out a few weeks later. At that time, everyone hated Keanu saying he could not act worth a shit but was giving high fanboyish praise to Johnny Depp for being able to portray all sorts of weird characters. John Wick has really changed people's mind and made them forget this shit.

I wonder if people remembers when they also hated Leo DiCaprio.

Hate is a strong word. I hated his performance in Bram Stoker's Dracula, doesn't mean I hated him. I also loved him in Bill and Ted around the same time. There are some movies that are right for him and some that aren't.

And if I hated Leo, I doubt I would've cried during Titanic when his character died.

Is it really so hard to plainly admit that people disliked him and his acting years ago but now are in favor of him because of the John Wick series? I don't think that's anything to be ashamed of. People would rather just act like they don't hate him or has never known anyone to hate him instead. Really weird.

I didn't like Leo DeCap for the longest time because of Titanic and being a pretty boy. He couldn't act and his performance in Man in the Mask was fucking horrible. It wasn't until Shutter Island that I started respecting his acting skills. See? Nothing shameful or embarrassing about admitting this for me.

Yes, exactly. As a matter of fact, the turnaround on Keanu predated John Wick as it was a combination of the Sad Keanu meme and a bunch of stories/anecdotes about what a wonderful guy he is in person that made people back off of him and start celebrating him as a sort of human teddy bear.

John Wick was just the big project he had in the wake of all that that people liked.

I don't think anyone ever thought he was a good actor but they liked the movies he was in. He just had a good 15 year stretch where he was in nothing but crap.

I think the general consensus is still that he can't act but his movies are fun and not the kind that required top tier acting chops and he seems like a good person worth supporting

I remember that lol. Its funny how this stuff comes in waves. People will jump on the Hate Train for something (which I honestly always saw as massive insecurity and just doing it to fit in anywhere) but then years later they think its the best thing / person ever.

I defended him back in the day because the first Matrix movie is my fave of all time. His character was supposed to be oblivious and confused so he was perfect for the role. But yeah his acting is garbage. Oh well I still liked his persona

I mean, that is true feedback. He can only really play the character he played all these years just people like the character.

John Wick is basically Neo but a little more aggressive.

I suppose what changed was people realized he generally is the nicest dude so criticizing him for only being able to play himself hust makes you look like a jerk.
And he was sad that one time. So who cares, enjoy John Wick.

Meanwhile Will Smith is revealed to be deplorable and also can only play himself. He is fair game.

My school Drama teacher took jabs at Keanu's acting as well.

Keanu is a bad actor, and a very likable guy who finds roles that he can succeed in.

I was the opposite.

I was a bigger fan when he barely started acting (I dont care that his Scorpion King movie was mediocre) than his current works.

The Scorpion King, Walking Tall, The Rundown, Doom, and Gridiron Gang are all far more enjoyable to me than his 'Jumanji and Furious' bodies of work.

I honestly can't think of very many actors I ever remember hating. And hate was usually for them doing abhorrent things off screen and not their acting.

Between Johnny Mnemonic and the Matrix he sort of had himself cemented as a symbol of cyberpunk. I think that was what the excitement was about.

Hes absolutely horrible in the majority of the movies he is in.
