The latter. Third Strike famously failed to capture an audience until well after it was the new one. Making it more the FFIX of the series.

Considered asking on the Fighting Games board but I'm pretty sure I'd get crucified for bringing up Smash in any context besides "it sucks/isn't a fighting game lol"
