The show is a little more dark and vulgar than the books, but not nearly as vulgar as GoT

If that's the tone the show is going for that not really that good.
They literally give Perrin a wife that he never had in the books, just so he can accidentally brutally murder her in the first episode.

This is apparently to "help" establish the character's notable aversion to violence that he has in the books. Y'see, in the books, he basically just grew up bigger/stronger than most, and so trained himself to be careful all the time so as to not break stuff or hurt people. And so when the time came to fight, he realized he'd much rather be a blacksmith. Yknow, because he doesn't like it.

So naturally to drive this point home, they invented a wife for him to chop in half.

That basically sets the tone moving forward. Episode fucking one.

Now yeah Wheel of Time shouldn't be given the tone of Game of Thrones. I don't remember the books too well but I do know that while they had their dark moments they were not that grim dark. If that's the tone the show is going for that not really that good.

I will still watch the show with an open mind but that's a point against it.
I don't remember the show being anywhere near as bad a GoT.

But we've yet to really get to the main 'darkness' of the show with the collared mages and men going insane.

Ouch. Yeah.

Well maybe I won't mind. I really should read the series again since I never read the Sanderson finished books.

Though they could have gone the opposite direction and even leaned more in the Brandon Sanderson style, whose Stormlight books have some almost MCU level quips going on. Oh and I'm not even attacking Stormlight Archive as I read and loved the first books but the character interactions did become sarcastic quip fests by the end of the second book.

But that's a whole different thing.

And that's great. I'm not gonna take that from you.

I personally feel it is a bad adaptation thar tries to be needlessly grimdark to try to appeal to the Game of Thrones crowd, and I feel that in so doing it does a disservice to the story and source material. And I feel the Perrin example is an easy-to-remember example that highlights this very well.

Just my opinion

My biggest criticism is that theres almost no humor or levity in the show. Everyone is depressed or stressed at all times.

My second biggest criticism is Lan ripping his shirt open in grief. That moment felt like a Wheel of Time parody.

Not that you could, but yeah. I understand that you don't approve of changes made for the show; it makes perfect sense. A lot of book-to-TV adaptations do a lot of things to change the feel and overall flow of the story. Game of Thrones is basically nothing like the books after a certain point, from what I hear people saying.

I think at a certain point it just is what it is. I've never read the books, so none of the changes will affect me.

Dont forget how they took Abel cauthon one of the best minor supporting characters whos important at several points and a good man, and turned him into a drunkard who beats his family, while turning his wife who doesnt get much mention in the books and turned her into a drunken lush, because reasons. Utter character assassination for fucking nothing.

It's nuts that the actor that played Mat quit the show 6 episodes in for mysterious reasons. He just didn't show up... presumably because he was nervous about covid 19 but no one really knows. This is why he doesn't enter the Ways with the rest of the group (which apparently was edited and partially reshot).

Not a professional way to handle things, I'm sure his acting career is toast.

To be clear, I dont think they depicted Traveling in the show, thats just what they made a Waygate look like.

The last four books are by far the best IMO for what its worth.
The scene in the tower where Moiaine visits Suian. She stands in front of the fireplace and Travels to Suians room. Sure it's a short trip, maybe a few floors but just peeping that a "handful of seasons" early ruins pretty much anytime the group travels with Moraine. It's defies logic as far as storytelling. These writers were given the bullets points of the story. One said hey theres this travel thing wouldnt it be cool if Moraine did this to visit Suian. We could use some cool cgi too. Then everyone around the claps and say that thats a great idea. Not one has read it and don't care about telling a coherent story

Ah. I didnt even remember it until you said it. I thought that was their rooms being connected by a terangreal that facilitated it. If Moiraine could Travel, whyd they go through the horse chase dog and pony show?

It is.

https://www.reddit.com/r/WoTshow/comments/rda8yr/some_confusion_about_the_scene_with_the_painting/hnzrk3j/

The X-Ray trivia bit for this scene says:
There are objects of the One Power created for specific purposes. Some of these objects do very mundane things like play music or create fabric, while others act as doorways to different places, spaces or experiences.
