Played Mario 64 first. Fully acknowledge it's a much more innovative and important game. But beyond that? IDK how people can think it's a better video game than Spyro. Feel like Spyro always got shafted. Most 3D platformers that weren't Mario did.

If you really want to stoke the flames, compare Spyro to Crash Bandicoot.

And yes, while SM64 controls pretty well, Spyro 1-3 control amazingly.

I'll try a rough Crash/Spyro ranking. They are all great games so this is just personal preference:

CTR > Crash 2 > Spyro 3 > Crash 1 > Spyro 2 > Crash Bash > Crash 3 = Spyro 1

Yup. Charging attack feels great plowing into or right through enemies. The platforming is tight. Gliding is on point. Fire breath attack has a nice spread.

Mario feels great running and jumping, but attacking? The shitty little punch and kick or picking stuff up and tossing it? Nah. Dive attack and the running leg sweep feel good, but don't get to be useful enough.

Crash Bandicoot aged like milk. Those games are really rough to play today.

Spyro's aged much better by comparison. Even the remade Spyro beats out the remade Crash series.

Yeah it definitely feels like youre meant to be jumping on things, which makes sense given Marios history.

The PS1s main issue IMO is that even great games could sometimes control awkwardly or stiffly (like MGS1), while the N64 was better overall. Banjo-Kazooie for example also controls very smoothly.

I prefer Spyro. I never could get into SM64. The controls always broke my will to continue. The version I got the farthest on was the 3DS version, but even that I didn't finish.

Spyro 2: Gateway to Glimmer (and Spyro the Dragon as well) is a game I've always loved and sometimes return to. Unfortunate it's being supplanted in peoples' mind by the disgusting remakes released by Actishitsion.

What's wrong with the Spyro remakes?
