Dat_Cracka_Jax posted... The "same as in English" part is what is being questioned. English Dictionary: https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/burro Even has a section of recent examples of usage on the web. I'm not going to say it is super common these days, but certainly 20 years ago a large portion of educated American non-spanish speakers would easily connect burro to donkey to jackass as they would read/learned it somewhere. ... I think the question is why would Frasier specifically say "same as in English", as if Woody would know that Burro = Donkey. Guess it's regional. Growing up in SoCal (NELA), for every time I heard "donkey", I'd probably hear "burro" 2-3X. --- Putin delenda est ... Copied to Clipboard!

TC is right. The joke doesnt make sense because burro isnt a loan word in English. No U.S. English speaker uses burro to refer to either donkeys or human jackasses.

Dat_Cracka_Jax posted... Do you have trouble reading full posts? Do you have difficultly understanding? Woody doesn't make the connection because he is a simpleton, that's the point of the character. Burro is an English used word, but Woody doesn't know that so he assumes that it must be some foreign word. They are just playing off him being a dullard twice in order to set up a homonym joke. it is pretty odd. imagine someone asks "what does hola mean?" or any word of any languageThis is basically the issue with the joke. If you ask what a foreign word means, you wouldn't say "the same as English." Even if it's a loanword. Example, saying "queso" in the US means cheese dip. Not just "cheese," but "queso" is clearly a loanword from Spanish. --- This is the duty of the Grim Angels. ... Copied to Clipboard!

Okay I have looked it up. And it does seem like burro is a English too for donkey. How ever it is just a small donkey. And a Jackass is a male donkey. So yes burro is a borrowed word. However it still misused here.
