I'm scheduled to fly home to Yellowknife in a few days, doesn't look like that will be happening now. I will have to find a place to stay until I can return, hopefully that will not be too long and I'll have a town to go back to.

I assume you're talking about just in general in the world and not just people in charge in the Northwest Territories or Canada? Because what's caused this is climate change.

Hay River is almost entirely evacuated as well, so those two combined are over half the population of the territory.

No, the people in charge waited way too long to issue an evacuation order and made the situation even more dangerous.

For context the NWT is vast and sparsely populated. With a population of 20k Yellowknife is the largest city. The entire territory has like 40k people so I don't know where these people are going to evacuate to, maybe Alberta?

I mean, you don't evacuate a major city on a whim. Especially considering the time and expense involved in a place that remote.

Basically their only options are driving to Edmonton or all the way to Calgary. Pretty much everywhere else along the route is already 100% full of other evacuees.

They've straight-up been downplaying the entire thing, despite all the other mass evacuations that have already occurred in the NWT, until yesterday evening, when they suddenly told everyone they needed to GTFO within less than 48 hours.

And apparently some people already knew yesterday morning that there was going to be an evacuation order announced, yet it took almost 12 hours to actually announce it.

Brutal. Hope things turn out well and that this is just precautionary in the end. NWT definitely don't have the infrastructure for a 20,000 person evacuation.

It's hard to wrap my head around that Yellowknife or Iqaluit burning down would effectively shut down a province/territory.

If I had to guess, there are possibly more lakes in the NWT than people.

And for a long period of time you couldn't even get to it by train, because the tracks had been sold to a for-profit company, and when they broke the company decided it wasn't worth the $$$ to fix them.

I didn't realize how big Kelowna was. I kept hearing about West Kelowna, evacuation order for a few thousand people. I didn't realize it was just part of a much bigger city.

They're technically two separate cities in one metropolitan area.

I guess to be more clear there's like 180k+ people potentially at risk here between the two cities.
